Ottawa Senators vs. Buffalo Sabres

Thursday, October 13, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at KeyBank Center

The Puck Line Pick

The opening game of the season for both teams will see the Senators travel to Buffalo to take on the Sabres. Ottawa won last season’s series, 2-1, and outscored Buffalo 9-4 over those three contests.

The Sens should be improved this season as they acquired veteran Claude Giroux who will be good for 20 goals this season and 24-year-old Alex DeBrincat who scored 41 goals for Chicago last season for the second time in his five-year career.

It's hard to imagine that the Sabres believe that their best option in net is 41-year-old Craig Anderson but they will learn soon enough he’s not the answer between the pipes but rather someone who should be a sparsely used backup.

That’s okay by me because he’s just another reason why the visitors are a good wager in this one – so good we’re laying the 1.5 and will sop up all of that juice when they cash.

Let’s take a look at a few trends entering this matchup.

  • Senators are 5-1 in their last 6 overall.
  • Senators are 5-1 in their last 6 when their opponent allows 5 goals or more in their previous game.
  • Senators are 5-1 in their last 6 meetings with Sabres.
  • Sabres are 14-39 in their last 53 Thursday games.

Predicted Score: Senators 4 – Sabres 1

New Jersey Devils vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Thursday, October 13, 2022 - 07:00 PM EDT at Wells Fargo Center

The Moneyline Pick

Last season’s Metropolitan Division cellar-dwellers will face off on Thursday night and the Flyers are hoping to duplicate the results from the last time these teams met when Philadelphia defeated New Jersey, 6-1, but still lost the season series, 2-1.

These teams are taking different approaches to this season with New Jersey bringing in veteran talent like Ondrej Palat, John Marino, Brendan Smith, Simon Nemec, and Vitek Vanecek, to improve their club right away.

Conversely, Philadelphia is going through a rebuild and looking to grow from within. Neither team was good last season but the Devils are definitely a team on the upswing while the Flyers could very well be even worse than they were last year.

Let’s take a look at a few relevant trends:

  • Flyers are 1-6 in their last 7 home games.
  • Flyers are 7-19 in their last 26 when their opponent scores 5 goals or more in their previous game.
  • Flyers are 6-17 in their last 23 vs. Metropolitan.
  • Flyers are 12-40 in their last 52 overall.

Predicted Score: Devils 5 – Flyers 3

Dallas Stars vs. Nashville Predators

Thursday, October 13, 2022 - 08:30 PM EDT at Bridgestone Arena

The Under/Over Pick

Who wins, who loses – who cares?! We are not here to pick the winner but rather to determine whether this game goes Over or Under the posted total at the top-rated sportsbooks. Based on what we saw with these teams last season we can cobble together a script that both are likely to follow.

Last season, the first two games between these clubs went over the total but in their last two meetings, it went low. But the Predators bolstered their mediocre defense in the offseason and it showed in their first two games, both played across the pond, against the Sharks where they limited San Jose to just three goals while allowing only one goal in their last three preseason games.

On the flip side, we see the Stars had offensive woes last year but their defense was and remains their strong suit. This bodes well for a low-scoring affair as both teams have augmented their defenses with solid talent while their offenses won’t keep opposition blueliners awake at night.

Let’s also review the total trends entering this early-season matchup.

  • Under is 3-0-2 in Stars last 5 road games.
  • Under is 3-1-1 in Stars last 5 Thursday games.
  • Under is 16-5-5 in the last 26 meetings in Nashville.
  • Under is 5-2-2 in Stars last 9 vs. a team with a winning record.
  • Under is 40-19-2 in Stars last 61 following a loss of 3 or more goals.
  • Under is 21-10-2 in Stars last 33 games playing on 3 or more days’ rest.
  • Under is 33-16-3 in Stars last 52 after allowing 5 goals or more in their previous game.
  • Under is 5-2 in Predators last 7 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game.

Predicted Score: Predators 2 – Stars 0
