Montreal Canadiens vs. Florida Panthers

Thursday, March 16, 2023 – 07:00 PM EDT at FLA Live Arena

Compared to the torrid pace they set last season in which Florida won the President’s Trophy by registering a staggering 122 points, it is safe to say the Panthers are underachieving this year, with a wild card berth in the offing but far from guaranteed.

However, their offense is still potent despite a defense that can be anemic at times. On Saturday, the Panthers saw their modest three-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt after losing to the Jets, 5-4, in overtime.

Florida was explosive on the power play, with three of their four goals coming via man-advantaged situations. Matthew Tkachuk (29 & 30) lit the lamp twice on the power play while Sam Reinhart (23) also exploited the man advantage opportunity. Marc Staal netted Florida’s only even-man goal but it wasn’t enough as the Jets buried the biscuit in the extra session off the stick of Mark Scheifele.

It was a bitter loss as the Panthers dominated offensively, outshooting Winnipeg, 48-27, yet still coming up short. That loss was a microcosm of the Panthers’ season, plenty of offense, but not enough defense or goaltending. Yet considering who they’re playing on Thursday night, I won’t sweat it, especially because Florida has had since Saturday to prepare for this game and will be well-rested against one of the most offensively inept clubs in the league.

But more importantly, the Panthers have beaten Montreal in six of their last seven meetings and all but one of those victories were by two goals or more!

Lay it and like it with the Cats on Thursday night as our first NHL pick

Boston Bruins vs. Winnipeg Jets

Thursday, March 16, 2023 - 08:00 PM EDT at Canada Life Centre

It’s a tough ask to lay north of (-160) on a road team that has lost their last two games. But when that team happens to be in the midst of a historic season then it’s not as tough to swallow.

Look, the Bruins had to endure a slump at some point and even though losing back-to-back games is really no big deal, it is when the team in question only had nine losses 64 games into the season when the bad things happened.

Boston’s offense has been slipping a bit recently but their defense is still tough as nails. Of course, slipping is a relative term when you’re talking about the team with the No. 2 ranked offense in the NHL.

Boston has won the last five meetings against the Jets and I expect the B’s to be locked, loaded, and motivated after dropping three of their last four.

Dallas Stars vs. Edmonton Oilers

Thursday, March 16, 2023 - 09:00 PM EDT at Rogers Place

In the interest of full disclosure, I advised a bet on the Stars in their Tuesday night battle in Vancouver with the caveat being they were playing the second leg of back-to-backs. That’s usually an opportunity to fade a team, not bet them.

However, there were a few other considerations factored into my erroneous decision as the Stars failed to shine in a 5-2 loss to the Canucks. Nevertheless, I am coming right back with Dallas against a potent Edmonton team that does little defensively.

So far, these teams have split the season series with Dallas winning, 6-2, in the same building in which they are playing tonight, while the Oilers returned the favor with a 6-3 win in Dallas on December 21st

I like the Stars in this spot because they have one of the best road records in the league at 20-9-5 while the Oilers, like the Stars, play better on the road than they do at home. Let’s also take a peek at a few trends working in Dallas’s favor.

  • The Stars are 6-0 in their last 6 after allowing 5 goals or more in their previous game.
  • The Stars are 5-0 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning record.
  • The Stars are 5-1 in their last 6 road games.
  • The Stars are 17-4 in their last 21 in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation.
