Washington Capitals vs. New York Rangers

Tuesday, March 14, 2023 – 07:00 PM EDT at Madison Square Garden

Key Stats

Analysis

Washington snapped a two-game drought with a 5-1 win over the Islanders on Saturday and will now travel to the home of their arch-rivals to take on the Rangers. After a grueling 3-2 shootout loss to the high-flying Devils two days earlier, the Caps bounced back in a big way with goals from Dylan Strome (16), T.J. Oshie (17), Anthony Mantha (10), Nic Dowd (11), and Nicklas Backstrom (4) to pave the way to the four-goal victory.

Conversely, the Rangers saw their modest two-game winning streak broken with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Penguins on Sunday. New York is now 4-5-2 over their last 11 games and has been dominated by the Capitals in their two previous contests this season with Washington skating to a 4-0 win in December followed by a 6-3 victory nearly three weeks ago.

The Caps have had an extra day to rest for this Metropolitan Division challenge and it’s no secret they have the Rangers’ number this season. We see no reason to shift gears on a trend that shows another Washington win waiting in the wings plus a healthy return from the books to boot.

Vegas Golden Knights vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Tuesday, March 14, 2023 - 07:00 PM EDT at Wells Fargo Center

Key Stats

Analysis

The Knights are streaking down the last quarter of the season, winning six of their last seven including a 5-3 victory over the Blues on Sunday night. The most impressive aspect of that win was that it came on the second leg of back-to-backs which saw Vegas upend the mighty Hurricanes, 4-0, in Carolina’s own barn the night before.

On the flip side, we see the Flyers begging for a merciful end to the season. Ironically, they have been playing like they are already on vacation by losing seven of their last eight contests, the latest being a 5-1 loss to the Penguins on Saturday.

This is a classic example of two teams going in polar opposite directions. The Knights defeated the Flyers, 2-1 in overtime, in December in their only meeting this season but this one won’t be as close. This is an ideal opportunity for the Knights to put a little more daylight between themselves and the second-place Kings so look for a big win from a team with one of the league’s best road records (20-7-5) and lay it on the puck line.

Dallas Stars vs. Vancouver Canucks

Tuesday, March 14, 2023 - 10:00 PM EDT at Rogers Arena

Key Stats

Analysis

Dallas has now won six of its last seven games and their offense is scoring in buckets. Over those last seven games, the Stars have averaged 5.57 goals per game. Now they will skate into Vancouver to exploit the weak-kneed defense of the Canucks, currently, 31st in the league in goals allowed, surrendering 3.8 goals per game.

This looks like a mismatch and a terrific chance for the Stars to avenge a sloppy 5-4 overtime loss to the Canucks in late February in which Dallas outshot Vancouver, 38-21. But to be fair and give credit where it is due, the Canucks have won their last four games. But if we know anything about the sub-.500 Canucks, it’s that these winning streaks are rare and they often end with an abrupt thud.

We should also take into consideration this is the second leg of back-to-back games with the Stars having defeated the Kraken, 5-3, last night. Nevertheless, let’s check out a few trends to bolster our conviction that Dallas is the right side here.

  • The Stars are 4-0 in their last 4 road games.
  • The Stars are 5-1 in their last 6 overall.
  • The Stars are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. Western Conference.
  • The Stars are 39-19 in their last 58 vs. a team with a losing record.
  • The Stars are 9-4 in the last 13 meetings in Vancouver.
  • The road team is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.

Don't forget that all of you Dallas locals can place your wagers at any of these Texas betting sites.
