It’s 2022 and it is cold outside in New York City, which means drink whiskey and watch hockey weather here on Bookmakers Review! With the NHL returning from its holiday break and we’re here to break down the best matchups for you and analyze the NHL odds… Well, at least I am… There’s no one else here but the dog.

Calgary Flames vs. Florida Panthers

Tuesday, January 04, 2022 – 07:00 PM EST at FLA Live Arena

First up, we’re looking at a battle of the respective five seeds of the Eastern and Western Conferences as the Calgary Flames take on the Florida Panthers. Calgary is a +120 underdog heading into tonight’s game, which would be a fun bet,  but then you realize that the Panthers just whupped the current top seed in the east in the Rangers 4-3, the defending Stanley Cup Champions 9-3, and Stanley Cup Finalist Montreal 5-2, hitting the ground running after the holiday break, a litany of suspended games and breaking a three-game losing streak.

That three-game losing streak may be telling though because it points to an inconsistency with the Ice Cats. While Montreal may be the worst team in the East at the present moment (2nd worst in the league behind Arizona), Florida has dropped some pretty big losses to teams lower than them in the standings such as Los Angeles (4-1), Ottawa (8-1) and even dropping a 4-1 bid to Seattle earlier in the season.

Not to say that they may not slap the former Atlanta Flames around tonight in Sunrise, Florida, but Calgary is the 2nd in the league in goals-against (2.23) and average 3.2 goals per game. Florida averages more goals per game but is 17th in goals against at 2.91 per game.

The tide turns when you realize Calgary has had eight of their last ten games postponed, and despite winning the two that weren’t postponed, they were to the basement-dwelling Blackhawks and Kraken and dropped the last four games before the shutdown.

For my NHL pick, I’d go with the under, if you’re looking to bet this game because both of these teams can keep it close, but I don’t see Calgary pulling the upset, despite them being at a +120 according to the top-rated books.

Nashville Predators vs. Vegas Golden Knights

Tuesday, January 04, 2022 - 10:00 PM EST at T-Mobile Arena

Our second game features two of the best teams in the western conference facing off as the Nashville Predators make their way into the realm of the Golden Knights, as both teams face off in Sin City.

The current top seed in the Western Conference, the Golden Knights have won seven of their last ten and all three of those losses have come the way of one goal.

Nashville on the other hand has won eight of their last ten, and unlike the Knights who are coming off a loss to Winnipeg, the Preds conducted a 6-1 drubbing of the Blackhawks the last time they took the ice. Nashville took a 5-2 loss in the first meeting between the two earlier in the season on home ice, which is not a good indicator for how this game is gonna go for the team with one of the best jerseys in hockey.

For this NHL pick, despite all of the delicious options like a -1.5 spread set at +200, I’d focus on the over 6 goals at +102 and Vegas straight up at -110.
