Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Florida Panthers

Thursday, May 19, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at BB&T Center

Lighting Defense Finally Show Up

Tampa Bay’s offensive players had to carry them through the series against the Maple Leafs as they allowed 24 goals in the 4-3 winning series, not ideal for a team who ended the regular season allowing just 2.59 goals per game.

Game one against Florida the Lighting defense stepped up as they allowed just 1 goal in the opening game and went unanswered for four goals. Andrei Vasilevskiy saved 33 of the Panthers 34 shots and Tampa Bay have now gone back-to-back games allowing just 1 goal.

Tampa Bay seem to have pulled the strings together just at the right moment, regular season play was a bit below par and they didn’t look like they would / could challenge for a spot in the final but given how they have looked in the playoffs, we wouldn’t back against them.

Florida Offense Looking Shaky?

Florida ended the regular season with 4.1 goals per game, the highest in the regular season, but they did score less than 4 goals against Washington in regular time in 4 of the 6-game series.

Florida’s offense struggled in game one and their only goal was scored by Anthony Duclair, his first of the playoffs. The Panthers will try get Carter Verhaeghe back into the fold as he wrapped up six goals and six assists in the opening series and pretty much single handily brought them into this round.

Florida were nullified in game one and they will have to work extra hard to get their offense going against this Lighting defense who are just starting to get things right, they had plenty of practice shutting down the Maple Leafs goalscoring machine in the later stages of the series.

It’s not a MUST win game but ideally going down 0-2 at home and then having to playback to back in your opponent’s arena is a terrifying prospect.

Team Trends

*Trends should never be your main source of information when it comes to making your betting picks, they are merely guidelines and mostly irrelevant information but nonetheless can be interesting to read.

Tampa Bay Lighting

  • The total has gone over in 13 of Tampa Bay's last 17 games.
  • Tampa Bay are 5-2 in their last 7 games against an opponent in the Atlantic Division.
  • Tampa Bay are 4-1 in their last 5 games.

Florida Panthers

  • Florida are 13-3 in their last 16 games at home.
  • The total has gone under in 5 of Florida's last 7 games against Tampa Bay.
  • Florida are 14-6 in their last 20 games.

What Are The Betting Odds and Current Lines?

Moneyline: Despite being undervalued and marked as underdogs in game one and winning the Lighting have been priced up as underdogs again at +140 whilst the Panthers are as low as -165 on the moneyline.

Total: The total has been set at 6.5 with the over coming in at -110 and the under best available at +100 with Everygame (visit our Evergame Review).

Puck Line: You will have to lay -175 to take the Lighting +1.5 on the PK line, which isn’t the worst set of odds for Tampa to lose by 1 or less goals given they have covered +1.5 in 18 of their previous 20 road games. Florida are +155 to win by two or more goals on the -1.5 PK line.

Betting Predictions

As much as we are big fans of this Lighting team, from their coaching staff to their roaster to their true grit that they show on the ice, we do believe this second game of the series is the Panthers to lose.

The Florida Panthers were the best team in the regular season and with the likes of Anthony Duclair, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Aleksander Barkov in the line-up that would scare any team. The Panthers have scored an average of 4 goals per game across their previous five at home against the Lighting despite losing 3 of those 5 games.

The only thing stopping us from taking the Panthers here is we don’t like their odds.

We are going to take the over in tonight’s matchup, the Lighting defense and goaltender is due some regression after back to back impressive defensive displays. On top of this, we don’t trust the Panthers' goaltender and defense so the Lighting should be able to score a few themselves.

Tough game to call but we will slightly side with the Panthers in an over-the-total game.

Predicted Score: Tampa Bay 3-4 Florida Panthers
