It’s a clash between two of the top teams in the NHL as the 1st-placed Western Conference Dallas Stars host the 2nd-placed Eastern Conference Carolina Hurricanes. Both these teams are pretty much guaranteed to make the playoffs at this stage of the season but there is still a lot of hockey to play before playoff time and if teams aren’t keeping sharp, they could find themselves lingering.
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Dallas Stars
Wednesday, January 25, 2023 – 08:30 PM EST at American Airlines Center
Carolina has been one of the best teams in the NHL this season and despite being lower ranked in their conference than the Dallas Stars, they have scored two more points than Dallas and have played three games less.
The Canes have won seven of their previous ten road games and won 4 of their previous ten road games against Dallas. Led by veteran Brent Burns and Sebastian Aho, the Hurricanes are one of the most dynamic teams in the NHL and although not ranked first in overall goals, they are ranked first in expected goals with a 60.27.
Dallas is on a back-to-back here and will be disappointed with their 3-2 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres last night. They mainly generate their offense on the power play and the Stars' top player Jason Robertson has registered 24 of his 65 points on the power play.
The Stars might be first right now in the Western Conference but know they can’t afford to start slipping up with just 5 points separating themselves in first and the Seattle Kraken in sixth.
Picks and Predictions
We rarely see an NHL over 5.5 line as low as -115 these days, and although it’s not an automatic over bet, we do sincerely like this over here and believe we are getting some good value.
The Stars are on a back-to-back, so they are not going to be 100 percent here, plus it's likely they start backup goaltender Scott Wedgewood. Although Wedgewood has played some decent goaltending and been one of the better backups in the league, he has still allowed 2.97 goals against per game on average.
Seven of the previous ten meetings between these teams saw six or more goals, which is impressive given these teams have been strong defensively for some time now. The Hurricanes put five past Wedgewood when these teams last met.
Predicted Score: Carolina Hurricanes 4 - Dallas Stars 3
NHL Pick: Over 5.5 Goals (-115) at BetOnline
Jason Robertson Over/Under Shots
The Dallas Stars “Star” man Jason Robertson has averaged 4.33 shots per game this season, which is the ninth highest in the entire NHL. We very much like this as a bounce-back spot for Robertson who registered only one shot on net last time out, which was just the seventh time in 49 games he had seen less than at least two shots on net.
Robertson’s line at over 2.5 shots for around -190 might be something to consider but we are favoring the better NHL odds at +100, this is a big game clash and the Stars will want to show up here, Robertson has seen 4+ shots in 6 of his 11 starts since the start of 2023.
NHL Pick: Jason Robertson Over 3.5 Shots (+100) at BetOnline
Brent Burns Over/Under Shots
This is one of the best value picks on today’s board, we are taking the Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Brent Burns to have 3+ shot at -130 betting odds. Burns is as consistent as one could be since the turn of the new year, having played in six games he has registered exactly three shots in all six games.
In the previous game between these teams, Brent Burns registered five shots and we believe with the defensive style the Dallas Stars can play, Burns could be on course for another big shooting night, although we only need him to hit three to cash our ticket.
NHL Pick: Brent Burns Over 2.5 Shots (-130) at BetOnline
