We have an eye-watering clash between first and second in the Atlantic division as the Boston Bruins look to end their losing streak in their final game prior to the NHL All-Star break.

Toronto has been strong in recent games having won six of their previous seven but is without Austin Matthews for this big divisional clash.

Check out what NHL picks we are betting for tonight’s matchup.

Boston Bruins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Wednesday, February 1, 2023 – 07:30 PM EST at Scotiabank Arena

Preview

We are in for another fantastic matchup between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs as the best team during the first half of the season (Boston) has now gone on a 0-3 losing slump which is the worst of their season to date.

These two teams are ranked highly inside the top defenses in the league with the Bruins actually allowing the least amount of goals with just 2.16 per game, the lowest by a LOT.

That said they have been on this 0-3 run, with all three games being on the road, at home Boston is 22-1-3. Their away stats still remain one of the best in the league having gone 16-6-2 and obviously before this current poor run it looked even better at 16-3-2.

Toronto is without VIP player Austin Matthews who has ironically not even been their top points scorer thus far this season trailing Willian Nylander and Mitch Marner by six points. That said he has also played four games less than both players.

Toronto is trailing the Bruins in the Atlantic division by 11 points and has played one game extra, so this is a very important game as it could really come down to the winner of this to claim the division and likely Conference.

Picks and Predictions

John Tavares (Toronto Maple Leafs)

  • Total Shots Over/Under

John Tavares has been the Maple Leafs second highest shot-taker this season averaging 3.60 per game.

With no Matthews in the line-up tonight (the Leafs' highest shot-taker) we suspect Tavares will see some extra shots as more shooting responsibility could fall on his shoulders.

Tavares has seen 4+ shots in 7 of his 14 games since 2023 and hit at least 3 shots on a further five more occasions.

Only seeing less than 3 on two occasions, with one of them being last time out when he registered only one shot, take Tavares over 3.5 shots tonight as we believe he will have his shooting gloves on in this in this big divisional clash / must-win game.

NHL Prop Pick: John Tavares Over 3.5 Shots (-110) at BetOnline

David Pastrnak (Boston Bruins)

  • Anytime Goalscorer

We believe the Bruins will win and it's realistic to believe they will need at least three goals to do so. David Pastrnak has been the highest scorer on the Bruins roster by a long way, having scored 38 compared to Patrice Bergeron’s 18.

Pastrnak has scored in 8 of his previous 14 games, that’s a 53% striker rate which should be -110 to score anytime, not his current +125, we don’t know if he will score tonight, but this is very much so a value pick and we like his chances at these NHL odds for sure.

Moneyline Pick

The Bruins have been poor lately but it’s all or nothing tonight as we can see this bunch of players going all in on winning this game. Both teams have faced off once this season with both taking a victory each, both by a margin of just one goal.

These are usually tight games when these teams met as the previous two meetings have been decided by just one goal.

We got to love the fact the Maple Leafs are without Austin Matthews and Boston just went uncharacteristically 0-3, it's highly unlikely they will go 0-4 just prior to this all-star break.

Of course, both teams have a chance here, don’t be shocked if the Maple Leafs pick up the victory, but the edge is slightly on the Bruins' side and BMR's top-rated online sportsbooks agree having made them (-120) road dogs.

Predicted Score: Boston Bruins 4 – Toronto Maple Leafs 2
