St. Louis Blues vs. Edmonton Oilers

Friday, April 01, 2022 – 09:00 PM EDT at Rogers Place

St. Louis enters this Friday night showdown with the Edmonton Oilers after winning both ends of a home-and-home series against Vancouver. It was just the elixir they needed after dropping five of their last six before Monday’s 4-1 victory over the Canucks followed by a 4-3 win on Wednesday.

After a scoreless first period Nick Leddy (2), Robert Thomas (13 – shorthanded), and Ryan O'Reilly (15 - power play) tallied in the second period to take a 3-2 St. Louis lead into the final stanza. Nathan Walker (6) would add to the lead midway through the third before the Canucks cut the lead to one. However, that was the last of the scoring as the Blues swept the two-game set and the three-game season series.

Left-winger, David Perron, had a pair of assists in the contest and said after the game, “It was a good game all around. I don’t know how they feel over there, but they took it to us pretty good."

“I also thought that we played more our game, the way we want to play to be successful, and it felt at times it was four lines just going one after another, doing it right, and it was awesome.”

Oilers Streaking at Home

Edmonton has won 8 of its last 11 games and the 8 wins all came at Rogers Place while the three losses were on the highway. On Friday night they will get another batch of the home-cookin' that has fed them so well as of late.

In the Oilers’ latest performance on Wednesday night, the Kings drew first blood but Cody Ceci (4) tied the game and the league’s leading goal-scorer, Leon Draisaitl, put Edmonton ahead with his 49th goal of the season.

Connor McDavid (37) would give the Oilers a two-goal advantage early in the second but a pair of goals by a determined King’s squad would even the game heading into the final frame. A scoreless third and overtime session would force a shootout and goals by Draisaitl and McDavid would hand Edmonton its 8 straight win at home in what was a 4-3 victory over Los Angeles.

“It was good to see that we can stick with it and come out on top at the end," Draisaitl said after the game. "That is a great sign for us. Who knows, we might see this team sometime down the stretch. It was a big two points for us.”

These teams will meet for the last time this season after Edmonton claimed a 5-4 win in November before St. Louis evened the score in late December with a 4-2 victory. The early NHL odds are revealing the Oilers as -123 home favorites. That appears to be a palatable price considering that the Blues’ leading scorer, Jordan Kyrou, may not start considering he was scratched in the last game against Vancouver for unspecified reasons.

The Blues are just 5-9 over their last 14 games and despite a prolific offense that ranks 5th in the league, averaging 3.52 goals per game, they are playing another offensive powerhouse that ranks 7th, averaging 3.43 GPG.

But one thing we should consider is that St. Louis goalie, Ville Husso, who has seized the starting role from Jordan Binnington will likely sit this one out after playing the last three games. If that is indeed the case then it will be a big boon to Edmonton’s chances as Binnington has struggled all season with a 3.14 goals against and has lost all of his last four starts.

The Oilers are rolling at home and they have the offensive weapons to make it a long night on even the toughest goalies. But in this one, they will be facing either an overworked starter or a struggling backup which makes Edmonton worth the meager price.
