The 2022 NHL season is just around the corner, so it is the perfect time to revisit the futures market for the Stanley Cup currently trading.

NHL odds and NHL futures odds have been trading since July, on the heels of Tampa Bay Lightning’s second-straight Stanley Cup victory. The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Montreal Canadians in five games, and they figure to be amongst the top contenders once again in the betting. However, they’re not the top favorite to win a third-straight Stanley Cup in 2022.

According to BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), one of several top-rated sportsbooks in the sports betting industry, they’re the second-best bet after the Colorado Avalanche, who clinched the President’s Trophy last season after a standout regular season campaign. (See Top 15 favorites listed below).

Colorado leads the field as the +475 best bet to lift the coveted trophy while Tampa Bay is priced at +600 on the NHL odds board. BetOnline offers additional prop bets such as a bet on a team to make the playoffs. The Avs are an almost sure bet to reach the postseason according to the odds. While the Bolts are equally a sure bet if priced at half the odds.

The only other team that is within the same price range as Colorado and Tampa Bay in Vegas. The Golden Knights are priced at +850 to win the Stanley Cup, rounding out the Top Three best bets.

The Golden Knights are an almost sure-bet to reach the postseason too. In fact, they very nearly reached the Stanley Cup finals after beating Colorado in the second round. However, they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the Western Conference finals in six games.

Colorado, Tampa Bay, and Vegas Prop Odds To Make the Playoffs

Colorado Avalanche

  • Yes -5000
  • No +1800

Tampa Bay Lightning

  • Yes -2500
  • No +1200

Vegas Golden Knights

  • Yes -1800
  • No +900

Western Conference Short On Legitimate Challengers

Both the Avalanche and Golden Knights play in the Western Conference, meaning they represent a stumbling block for each other. However, to look at the Top 15 best bets, it becomes quite clear that these two represent the best of the West.

The next closest Western Conference rival is the Dallas Stars, but with NHL odds of +2000, they’re a good distance off. Although, it’s worth noting that the Stars were a couple of games and few healthy players short of winning the 2020 Stanley Cup over the Lightning.

The Connor McDavid-inspired Edmonton Oilers, along with the Minnesota Wild (both priced at +2500), represent potential Stanley Cup challengers to emerge from the West. They are dangerous floaters in the mix, but a lot would have to happen for either to get through in 2022.

All in all, only five teams have the talent, skill, quality, and potential according to oddsmakers to become champions of the NHL in the upcoming season. It doesn’t take a mathematical whizz to figure out that the odds are skewed against Western Conference teams.

Eastern Conference Stacked Deep In Contenders

The Lightning, by contrast, has no stumbling block that is priced similarly in triple-digits. However, they’re faced with steep competition to reach the Stanley Cup finals with ten different teams ranking amongst the top 15.

Tampa Bay’s nearest threat to reach the Stanley Cup finals comes in the form of the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs (both priced at +1400). As well, the New York Islanders (+1600) loom large. The Isle twice lost to the Lightning in the Eastern Conference finals.

After the Islanders, the Florida Panthers, New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins strike an attractive pose as middleweight contenders priced at +1800. In the eyes of many NHL bettors, this group falls into the category of sleeper NHL picks.

After which the Carolina Hurricanes (+2500), Washington Capitals (+2800), and the Philadelphia Flyers (+3000) round out the Top 15. These are teams with lots of talent, quality, and star power, so they can’t be overlooked, even though the NHL’s odds are less than convincing.
