Colorado Avalanche vs. Vancouver Canucks

Friday, January 20, 2023 – 10:00 PM EST at Rogers Arena

Team Analysis

Colorado Avalanche

It’s been a strong string of games the Avalanche have strung together going 3-0 and outscoring their opponents 17-4 with all their top players contributing with Nathan McKinnon picking up 10 points, Mikko Rantanen 5 points, and Arttuti Lehkonen 11 points.

The current Stanley Cup holders are 9th in the Western Conference and currently outside of a playoff spot within their division, as they trail the Minnesota Wild by 5 points but have one game in hand. Colorado has been interesting on the road this season in the sense that they won 9 of their previous 15 road games, but 6 of those nine went to overtime, proving they're hard to beat.

The Avalanche have had some injury setbacks this season, Nathan McKinnon was out for a few weeks, and tonight they have no less than six players unavailable through injury, most notably Cale Maker, who is absolutely pivotal to this team. At the time of writing, we are unsure if Maker is 100% out for tonight but the official update is “day to day”.

Vancouver Canucks

It’s been a calamity for the Vancouver Canucks thus far this season and the internal turmoil is starting to heat up. After a shocking start to the season where they failed to win any of their first seven games, they then went and had a plus 50% win record having won 9 of the next 13 games.

As we stated earlier, the Canucks have now gone on to win only two of their previous 10 games and the pressure is really starting to heat up on the organization as it's apparent there is a clear out on the way.

Despite things being so bad, the Canucks offense has been solid this season, having had the 9th best goals per game overall and had five players score 40 or more points, which is one of the highest ratios in the league.

The problem for Vancouver has been their 31st-ranked defense, allowing 3.95 goals per game.

Stats and Trends

  • Colorado is 2-4 in their last 6 games against Vancouver

Vancouver Canucks

  • The Total has gone over in 4 of Vancouver's last 5 games at home
  • Vancouver is 1-4 in their last 5 games against an opponent in the Central Division

Avalanche vs Canucks: Picks and Predictions

It’s always difficult to make a case for an underdog, especially one going through so much turmoil right now, but hear us out.

The Avalanche are potentially without Cale Maker tonight, which is a big deal, on top of this Colorado has not been trustworthy this season, especially with so many injuries.

Right now they seem to be clicking, but they have been prone to a letdown spot on more than a few occasions this season and we believe this could be the night to target the current Stanley Cup champions to take a loss in Canada.

Vancouver is 2-0 against the Avalanche thus far this season and beat them only 15 days ago, yes, the Avalanche are the better team right now, but you can’t write off the offensive power the Canucks possess up front. They might concede 3 or even 4 goals but, on their night, can produce 5/6 goals if they're on it.

If you’re looking to stay away from the game-winner here, we also do advise taking the Total to go over 6.5, the Canucks offense and defense speak for themselves and the Canucks have seen the 4th most amount of over 6.5’s in the Western Conference.
