Washington Football Team vs. Carolina Panthers

Sunday, November 21, 2021 – 01:00 PM EST at Bank of America Stadium

The Matchup

The Washington Football Team took the reigning Super Bowl Champs by surprise last Sunday, beating them 29-19. This was an impressive win as Washington has struggled all season long to find some momentum. But, things don’t get any easier this week for them as Ron Rivera faces his former team in front of his former home crowd of 9 years.

The good news? Carolina welcomed back longtime quarterback Cam Newton last week and Rivera admitted he has a file of old plays for if he ever had to face Newton.

So Washington’s defense should show up to Charlotte with some sweet surprises under their belts, that is of course if Newton starts. But to be honest, it’s not so much Newton they need to be worrying about. Christian McCaffrey is healthy again and that will be where their main focus will need to be––stopping the run.

Washington jumped off to a 2-2 start to the season where they beat the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons. And their win over the Bucs came after a four-game losing streak against the Chiefs, Saints, Packers, and Broncos. In their win over Brady, quarterback Taylor Heinicke finished with 256 yards and a score while running back Antonio Gibson added 64 yards and two TDs on the ground. Receiver Terry McLaurin led through the air with 59 yards on six catches.

In Carolina, they kicked off the season beating the Jets, Saints, and Texans. Similar to Washington, they had a four-game losing streak, losing to the Eagles, Cowboys, Vikings, and Giants before beating the Falcons in Week 8. In their most recent 34-10 win, they took advantage of a Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins-less Arizona team.

With Sam Darnold sidelined, backup QB P.J. Walker had 167 yards and an interception, while Cam Newton played nine snaps and had a touchdown. McCaffrey led the rush with 95 yards and receivers with 66 yards from 10 catches.

The Prediction

For your NFL pick consider that this game will be a 1 p.m. game to watch, especially if Newton gets the starts. Washingtons rush defense has been one of their strengths this season, so if they can hone in on that, they should be able to secure Carolina’s top weapon.

It’s unclear what to expect for Cam since we haven’t seen him play since last season where he struggled in the passing game. But there is certainly nobody who knows his weaknesses like Rivera. If Newton starts, expect Washington to pull off the win. And if he doesn’t, still expect them to make this a toe-to-toe game.
