New England Patriots vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Sunday, September 18, 2022 – 01:00 PM EDT at Acrisure Stadium

What You Need to Know About Week 1

The story throughout the offseason in New England has been the simmering controversy regarding the naming of offensive and defensive coordinators. But Bill Belichick has remained tight-lipped, even though Matt Patricia, a man who has made his bones on defense, has been assigned the offensive play-calling duties, if not in name, then for all intents and purposes.

The Patriots lost their season-opener against Miami, 20-7, and the offense looked as bewildered as the fans have been about Belichick’s secrecy regarding what coaches are doing what.

Mac Jones was clearly frustrated and it showed in his stat line, 21-of-30, 213 yards, one TD, and a pick. How this gets a whole lot better in one week is beyond me.

Patriots vs. Steelers: Pick and Prediction

The NFL odds on this game are showing the Patriots as 1 to 1 ½ point road favorites. "Why?", you ask. Well, TJ Watt is out for the year while starting tailback, Najee Harris, is questionable for this game. Those are two substantial players to be absent but Harris could be back for this one.

The Steelers looked serviceable on offense with Mitchell Trubisky starting over Pittsburgh’s heir-apparent, first-rounder Kenny Pickett. But the defense, especially with Minkah Fitzpatrick, looked impressive.

I think that Pittsburgh’s defense alone is enough to rattle the Patriots’ disjointed offense and I am expecting a Steelers victory.

Miami Dolphins vs. Baltimore Ravens

Sunday, September 18, 2022 - 01:00 PM EDT at M&T Bank Stadium

What You Need to Know About Week 1

The Dolphins claimed a 20-7 win over the Patriots last week but Tua Tagovailoa was not as good as his 23-of-33 for 270 yards and a touchdown would lead you to believe. He certainly wasn’t a liability but he is going to have to figure out how to maximize all the elite talent surrounding him if he wants to get away with some of his mental miscues when he plays better teams.

The Ravens easily dispatched the Jets, 24-9, and Lamar Jackson had 3 touchdown strikes in the victory. Baltimore’s defense held New York to less than 10 points despite 59 passes thrown by Joe Flacco.

The Ravens’ rushing attack was hardly in midseason form but it was a workmanlike victory that also saw their backers cash a ticket as they easily covered the 6 ½ point spread.

Dolphins vs. Ravens: Pick and Prediction

Although I am much higher on the Ravens than the Dolphins this season, I think Miami can be a tough out if Tua gets in a rhythm with his talented receivers. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are a lethal combination and I’m not sure the Ravens will be able to contain them if Tua starts clicking with them.

We are getting value on the road dog here because the public is smitten by Lamar Jackson which is always a good sign when you’re on the opposite side. I’m not sure this is one of the games you bet the rent on, but the Fish will keep it within the margins.

Predicted Score: Ravens 27 - Dolphins 26

New York Jets vs. Cleveland Browns

Sunday, September 18, 2022 - 01:00 PM EDT at FirstEnergy Stadium

What You Need to Know About Week 1

The Jets were outclassed last week by the Ravens while the Browns narrowly escaped with a 26-24 victory as 2 ½-point road dogs in Carolina.

This game is all about trying to think of a number that would make you bet on the Jets. What is it? Is 7 ½ enough? Maybe 10…but wait, they’re on the road, shouldn’t that be more like 13 even against the Deshaun Watson-less Browns?

Jets vs. Browns: Pick and Prediction

As of this early week writing, the best sportsbooks are giving Gang Green a 6-point head start (already down from 6 ½) against a Browns team that had all it could handle against the Panthers. But here’s the thing all of you Jet-haters, they did an outstanding job of stopping the run last week with Baltimore’s lead back, Kenyan Drake, picking up only 31 yards on the ground.

I point this out because the biggest concern, maybe the only concern, they will have is Nick Chubb who just ran roughshod over the Panthers last week. But Cleveland QB Jacoby Brissett did what he always does, he worked as a game manager, careful not to turn the ball over, and letting his teammates do what they do best. He was 18-of-34 with 147 yards, a touchdown, and no picks. Hello Teddy Bridgewater!

I believe the Jets can hang as long as they don’t let Chubb run them ragged. Flacco will toss it up and get lucky enough here and there to put enough points on the board to keep it relatively close. Grab the points.

Predicted Score: Browns 23 – Jets 19
