The Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins collide in an inter-conference showdown in Week 12 of the NFL. The Panthers are coming off a disheartening loss to the Washington Football Team at home while the Miami Dolphins are coming off a win over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.
Despite Miami’s winning performance at the weekend, which marked their third-straight win, markets opened this game with the Dolphins at the disadvantage. Bookmakers across the board opened with Miami as the 1-point home underdogs to Carolina, and since open doors, the lines have swelled up to Miami +2 at several shops.
Does the market have it right? Or are the Dolphins being underrated unfairly at the expense of the Panthers, who’ve seen their stock temporarily climb since the return of Cam Newton a couple of weeks ago?

Panthers Fall to Former Head Coach Ron Rivera’s Football Team
The matchup between the Washington Football Team and Carolina Panthers at the Bank of America Stadium in Week 11 was hyped up in a big way because of its reunion/revenge backstory between Ron Rivera and his former team. Cam Newton resigning with the Panthers was a timely development that added to the enigma and intrigue surrounding this game.
As well, Carolina’s big win over the Cardinals in Week 10, in which Newton featured and scored his first touchdown this season, added to the Panthers’ value as the betting favorites.
Tale told Rivera got his revenge as Washington clinched the 27-21 win. Rivera had laid the foundations for the Panthers and developed the organization into a bona fide Super Bowl contender during his nine years in Carolina, but his tenure ended on a rather sour and acrimonious note when he was fired barely a few weeks into the 2019 season following a bad start to Carolina’s campaign at the time.
To say the manner of his dismissal was unbefitting to a coach of his stature is an understatement. Carolina shot itself in the foot according to coach Matt Rhule with too many late penalties and the defense’s inability to slow down Taylor Heinicke and the Washington offense.
Heinicke looked almost elite as the Panthers' defense failed to pressure him in the pocket and gave him loads of space to move the chains through the air and on the ground. Newton had a solid performance finishing 21 of 27 passes for 189 yards and two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.
Miami Riding a Three-Game Winning Streak
The Dolphins are riding a three-game winning streak into Week 12, a run of form that saw the Dolphins beat the Houston Texans 17-9 in Week 9 and stun the Baltimore Ravens 22-10 on Thursday Night Football in Week 10. Last weekend, the Dolphins extended their rich vein of form with a 24-17 win over the Jets, scuppering Joe Flacco’s return to MetLife Stadium.
The Dolphins closed as the 3.5-point road favorites on the NFL odds board and came through with the cover quite comfortably. However, the win marked only the fourth win of the season for the Dolphins.
NFL Predictions and Picks
Since the return of Newton and Christian McCaffrey’s return to health, the Panthers have been a better team overall. Granted they lost last week’s emotional encounter with former head coach Rivera, but that was always going to be a possibility. Besides, it was only Newton’s second game and first start for the Panthers.
Miami might have won three straight games, but they’re a beatable side. It’s impossible to tell whether Miami’s improvement is genuine considering they beat two of the worst teams in the league – the Texans and Jets – and capitalized on Raven's side that clearly underestimated the Dolphins and came out flat in primetime football.
Moreover, all three of these teams boast the worst defense in terms of yards per play. Yup! The Ravens are in this group with the second-most yards per play. All told, the Panthers should be able to get the better of the Dolphins in this game. If you can get the Panthers as the 1-point road favorite that would be the best line for NFL picks. However, the Panthers at – 1.5 or -2 would still be worth a tickle too.
