Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday, October 16, 2022 – 08:20 PM EDT at Lincoln Financial Field

What You Should Know

The NFC East was supposed to be a bit of a joke this season, but it’s instead shaping up as a very interesting division with the Eagles at 5-0 and the Cowboys and surprising New York Giants at 4-1 each – yeah, the Commanders stink and it’s very possible that Ron Rivera is the next head coach fired after Carolina dumped Matt Rhule on Monday.

Per usual, NBC has the Sunday night contest for this Dallas at Philadelphia matchup, one of the more heated rivalries in the NFL. Last year, the Cowboys swept the Eagles and won both games in blowout fashion.

The one in Philadelphia in Week 18 and Dallas rolled 51-26. Dak Prescott threw a career-high 5 touchdowns, but we may not see him this week (see below). The Eagles were locked into their Wild-Card seeding so they rested a lot of guys including QB Jalen Hurts. Gardner Minshew started under center but he won’t take the field Sunday unless Hurts is injured.

The home team is 6-1 against the spread in the past seven meetings on the NFL picks

Dallas Cowboys Analysis

Will Dak Prescott Return for Week 6?

So, will Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott play for the first time since injuring his thumb in Week 1? The short answer is we may not know for at least a few days, although it’s being reported that Prescott would have to practice in full in order for Coach Mike McCarthy to put him in the lineup.

Prescott called himself “day to day” after Sunday’s 22-10 win over the Rams and said he can grip the football, which is what his return is predicated on. Prescott will see a doctor again on Tuesday.

How Is Cooper Rush Doing?

Might the Cowboys be better off with backup Cooper Rush? I’m not ready to say that, but he is now 5-0 as a starter in his career following Sunday’s minor upset.

Rush didn’t do much statistically vs. LA, going 10-for-16 for 102 yards with no turnovers or TDs, and is the first Cowboys quarterback to win his first five starts with the franchise since Steve Beuerlein did so in 1991.

The coaching staff simply wants Rush to be a game manager and not make mistakes. The Cowboys have been winning with a dominant defense and strong running game, rushing for 163 yards and a TD on 34 carries on Sunday. 9 of Dallas' 22 points came off turnovers on Sunday.

Surprising Micah Parsons

Second-year linebacker Micah Parsons may already have surpassed the Rams’ Aaron Donald as the league’s top defender. Parsons had 2 more sacks vs. the Rams and is tied for the league lead with 6.

He is the clear-cut +100 favorite at BMR’s top-rated books to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Parsons can rush from all four spots on the line and play linebacker, too.

Cowboys' Defense Looking Dangerous

No team has scored more than 19 points against the Cowboys so far this season and Sunday marked the first time they have held back-to-back opponents to 10 points since 2009.

It’s the first time that Dallas has held its first five opponents to no more than 19 points since 1972. The Cowboys are just the second out of 21 teams to have faced and beaten both Super Bowl teams from the previous year in the first five weeks of a season.

It appears the Cowboys got out of Sunday’s game without any major injuries. They are 10-1 against the spread in their past 11 road games.

Philadelphia Eagles Analysis

Last Unbeaten Team Standing

The Eagles remain the NFL’s only unbeaten team and are +250 favorites on the NFL futures odds to win the NFC. Philly was a 20-17 winner at Arizona on Sunday to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2004, when the team won its first seven games and finished 13-3.

Kicker Situation

The Cards somewhat bungled things at the end and ended up missing a 43-yard field goal to tie. Eagles' kicker Cameron Dicker — who was playing in place of the injured Jake Elliott — made a 23-yard field goal with 1:42 remaining. Not clear if Elliott will be back this week.

MVP-Level Hurts

Jalen Hurts passed for 239 yards and rushed for 2 scores (up to 6 rushing TDs). He’s now a +600 third favorite to win NFL MVP behind Buffalo’s Josh Allen (+200) and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes (+500).

The Eagles are fourth in the NFL in rushing at 160.0 ypg and had 139 on the ground Sunday.

Defensive Addition Paying Off

Defensively, one of Philly’s big offseason additions was giving a three-year, $45 million deal to edge rusher Haason Reddick, and that has been a wise move thus far as he had a sack Sunday and has 4.5 over his past three games.

Injuries Status

Injury-wise, Philadelphia entered the Arizona game without left tackle Jordan Mailata (shoulder), and it lost left guard Landon Dickerson (leg) and center Jason Kelce (ankle) for parts of the game before they eventually returned. Right guard Isaac Seumalo was limited last week with an ankle injury but did play.

Cowboys vs. Eagles: Pick and Prediction

There are a few special props at BMR’s top-rated books on the Eagles. They are +170 favorites to have the most regular-season wins of any team, just ahead of the Super Bowl-favored Buffalo Bills (+225). That Philadelphia goes 17-0 is a +1600 yes-only option.

The team to hand the Eagles their first loss is Dallas at +150. Then Philadelphia is on its bye and hosts Pittsburgh in Week 8 and the Steelers are +500 second favorites on that prop.

I get why the Eagles are favored, but that tremendous Dallas defense should be able to slow down Philly’s running game. The Eagles are 0-4 ATS in their past four after totaling more than 350 yards in their previous game.
