We’ve got three games with teams desperately needing wins or their playoff hopes might be done very early in the season. The Steelers have lost three straight games and will take on the Bills, who many experts believe is the league’s best team.

Another team that has lost three straight is the Commanders, who are watching the Cowboys and Eagles pull away in the NFC East. Finally, we’ve got the surging 49ers, who look to pile more misery onto the Panthers, who have opened the season losing 3 of 4 games.

Read on for our breakdown of these three games, including the latest NFL odds and our NFL betting picks, predictions, and analysis.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Buffalo Bills

Sunday, October 09, 2022 – 01:00 PM EDT at Highmark Stadium

Steelers Desperate to Stay Close In AFC North

Although they've lost three in a row, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still within striking distance of the rest of the AFC North. The three teams in the division ahead of them are all tied on two wins, so a win against the Bills would see them stay in contention. That is easier said than done for a number of reasons, and the current line suggests that not too many in Vegas give them a chance of staying close, let alone winning outright. The Bills come into this home game as -14 point favorites with a total sitting at 47 points.

While MVP candidate Josh Allen and the offense get most of the headlines, Buffalo's defense is the real deal. They battle through a laundry list of injuries and have still managed to hold some of the league's most explosive offenses to scores that have kept their team in games. The Steelers are the complete opposite of an explosive offense, and there's a real possibility they don't even score 14 total points in this game, let alone cover that spread.

To make matters worse for the Steelers, they don't have a competent starting quarterback. It's clear that Mitch Trubisky is a backup quarterback in this league. With that said, it seems like Kenny Pickett will be the starting quarterback in Buffalo. We only have a small sample size of what he can do and it isn't pretty. Last week against the Jets, he threw 3 interceptions against the Jets in only 13 attempts.

The Bills are not the Jets, and even though I don't think laying 14 points is good business, I wouldn't see this game staying close at all.

Tennessee Titans vs. Washington Commanders

Sunday, October 09, 2022 - 01:00 PM EDT at FedExField

Commanders' Offensive Line Must Step Up

We know what Carson Wentz is at this point in his career. He's the definition of a boom or bust quarterback. If he has time to and is in rhythm, there isn't a throw he can't make. If he doesn't have time and is forced to improvise, it's a disaster. The Commanders' offensive line, especially on the interior has not done a good enough job protecting him. Last week Wentz was under pressure on 45% of his dropbacks, and the week before, it was 42%. As a result, he's been sacked 11 times and thrown 2 picks in the last two weeks.

This week the Commanders take on the Titans, who come into this game as -2.5 point road favorites with the total sitting at 42.5. The Titans' front seven can get at Wentz, so the Commanders' running game will need to be effective here to protect him.

Speaking of running games, the Titans are one of the teams in this league that still believe in the run, and with good reason. The Commanders will need to figure out a way to slow down Derrick Henry and this offensive line. If they get going, quarterback Ryan Tannehill is much more effective. Other than last week, Washington's run defense has been bad, so they will definitely need a repeat performance.

Neither offense is what anyone would consider explosive and I see both teams leaning on the run game because it's what works for the Titans and the Commanders need to protect Wentz. I see a 21-17 final, which is why my official play on this game is the under 42.5.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Carolina Panthers

Sunday, October 9, 2022 - 4:05 PM EDT at Bank of America Stadium

49ers Coming Off a Big Win Last Week

The San Francisco 49ers are a well-oiled machine under head coach Kyle Shanahan. They play smash-mouth football mixed with very creative play calling. They have unique weapons like Deebo Samuel, who can take a short pass or a traditional running play to the house at any given moment. A lot of people questioned the Jimmy Garoppolo contract in the offseason, but Shanahan clearly has a bigger plan. He knows that his preferred starting QB Trey Lance has more potential than the final product, and he needs a backup that already knows his offense.

While the quarterback picture in San Francisco is solid, that is not the word you would use in Carolina at the moment. Things have gone from bad to worse for Baker Mayfield recently, as his new lease on life in Carolina may be up sooner rather than later.

He has easily been one of the worst starting quarterbacks this season, and if he keeps this up, he might be on the path to becoming a career backup. He still has time to turn things around, but the clock is ticking very loudly right now.

Carolina comes into this game as +6 underdogs, which seems like a short line to me. As good as the 49ers offensive can be, this defense is elite.

They are good on all levels and will be an absolute nightmare for an already struggling Mayfield. Although you are clearly getting the worst of the line if you missed it at -3 –which is where it openedI fully expect a double-digit win by the 49ers in this spot, even on a short week.
