Today we are going to dive into three of the Sunday games on the early slate, and look for bets and scorelines for NFL Week 1:
- Ravens vs. Jets
- Jaguars vs. Commanders
- Colts vs. Texans
Baltimore Ravens vs. New York Jets
Sunday, September 11, 2022 – 01:00 PM EDT at MetLife Stadium
- Spread: Ravens -7 - Jets +7
- Total: 44.5
Historically, in recent seasons the Baltimore Ravens have been notoriously quick starters to their NFL campaigns.
Losing Marquis Brown to the Arizona Cardinals in the off-season is a blow, although throwing the ball isn’t their go-to game. Star quarterback, Lamar Jackson’s contract negotiations are still up in the air, and with them spilling over into the new season, that will not be a positive for the locker room. If it gets settled soon, the Ravens are good enough to make a run at the Super Bowl LVII, if not, 2022/2023 could become tedious in Baltimore.
Pre-season has been promising for the New York Jets, but that’s nothing new, as optimism often follows the Jets at the start of recent seasons.
The question is, will it be another false dawn? or will the Jets rise up? Young quarterback, Zach Wilson had something of a nightmare rookie season. I am sure he’s better than that and a big step up in year two should be expected. Tight end, C.J. Uzomah is an interesting acquisition and brings another reason for modest optimism.
Ravens vs. Jets: Betting Pick and Prediction
I am not expecting a classic match between these two teams, as the Jets attempt to build confidence while the Ravens’ team spirit and focus have to be taken on trust with the Lamar Jackson issue overspilling into game time.
In the first game of the season, I expect the New York Jets to be competitive and feisty at home, and with a touchdown spread to cover for the Ravens, I lean toward the Jets.
Last season, on NFL Day one there was a slew of shocks, so for our first NFL pick, I advise splitting stakes between spread and moneyline on the New York Jets.
Score Prediction: New York Jets 20 - 17 Baltimore Ravens
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Washington Commanders
Sunday, September 11, 2022 - 01:00 PM EDT at FedExField
- Spread: Jaguars +3 - Commanders -3
- Total: 44
There’s excitement in Jacksonville with the new head coach, Doug Pederson bedded in from last February for the new season.
The two-time Super Bowl winner has what it takes to lift the Jags to the next level, having coached the Philadelphia Eagles to their first Super Bowl in 2017. Pederson is a very attack-minded coach, so with Evan Engram added in the off-season at tight end, points should not be the problem they sometimes have been in Jacksonville
Similarly, the Washington Commanders have room for optimism after a steady campaign in 2021/2022.
Carson Wentz brings a higher level of stability to the crucial quarterback spot than in recent years after signing from the Indianapolis Colts. Several sneaky good names can make a regular spot for themselves in Washington if they can push the franchise toward the playoffs like wide receiver Jahan Dotson, and rusher Antonio Gibson.
Jaguars vs. Commanders: Betting Pick and Prediction
Both teams come into NFL Week 1 full of renewed hope and rightly so, as both teams have the tools in the shed to make the playoffs.
A tight match wouldn’t surprise me, but I have to side with the home team who may be more settled to begin the new season.
With that in mind, the spread doesn’t interest me, and I would rather take the moneyline at -165 with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review).
Score Prediction: Washington Commanders 20 - 17 Jacksonville Jaguars
NFL Pick: Commanders ML (-165) at BetOnline
Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans
Sunday, September 11, 2022 - 01:00 PM EDT at NRG Stadium
- Spread: Colts -8 - Texans +8
- Total: 45.5
The Indianapolis Colts have been all the rage for this year's Super Bowl LVII campaign. Rightly so, with the addition of star quarterback, Matt Ryan in the off-season. It's not too long ago that he was playing in Super Bowl final and he will be a strong starting point around which to build a team.
Their weakness looks out wide in attack, and the Colts could do with the emergence of someone like the draft pick, Parris Campbell to solidify their wing play.
With the DeShaun Watson debacle now behind them, the Houston Texans can start building in earnest this year.
That key quarterback position will be an opportunity for Davis Mills to build on a few promising performances at the backend of last season, to make the position, his own.
It's hard to believe that the 2022/2023 campaign is going to be anything but a struggle for the Houston Texans. The recent signing of tight end O.J. Howard, last week, is a nice positive offensive boost to team spirit on the eve of the season start.
Colts vs. Texans: Betting Pick and Prediction
With this being the first week of the season and home-field advantage for the Houston Texans we should expect a determined effort in their divisional clash with the Indianapolis Colts.
Despite the NFL odds expecting good things from the Colts, my gut is telling me, they could get caught out in week one of the new NFL season.
With the spread set over a touchdown, let's trust the Houston Texans to cover with a home-field advantage, while adding a more modest stake on the money line.
Score Prediction: Houston Texans 24 - 23 Indianapolis Colts
NFL Pick: Texans +8 (-112) at BetOnline
NFL Pick: Texans ML (+271) at Bookmaker
