Los Angeles Rams vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Sunday, February 13, 2022 – 06:30 PM EST at SoFi Stadium

The NFL season comes to an end Sunday in Super Bowl 56 as the NFC champion Los Angeles Rams face the surprise AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals. Even though Los Angeles is playing in its own stadium it will be the visiting team – and use the visiting locker room – because it’s the AFC’s turn to be the home team.

Because the Bengals are the home team, they got first dibs on jersey color and chose black, meaning the Rams will wear white tops. That could be great news for Rams backers as 14 of the last 17 Super Bowl winners wore white jerseys. That includes the New England Patriots three years ago, when the Rams, the designated home team for Super Bowl 53, wore their royal blue jerseys.

Let’s take a look at Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who according to the NFL odds, is the +120 favorite to win Super Bowl MVP. Usually, the award goes to the quarterback of the winning team. A QB has won MVP 31 times.

Leaving Lions Worked Wonders

Stafford was the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft out of Georgia by the Detroit Lions, one of the perennial laughingstock franchises in the league and the only NFC team to never reach a Super Bowl. Stafford didn’t force a trade but also wasn’t upset that Detroit dealt him last offseason to the Rams for QB Jared Goff, two first-round picks, and a third-round pick. Goff was the top pick in the 2016 draft and it marked the first exchange of No. 1 picks in the common draft era.

Joe Burrow vs. Stafford will be the second starting QB matchup between No. 1 overall picks in the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos defeated Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.

The Lions rarely made the playoffs when Stafford was there and never won a postseason game with him. Including the playoffs, Stafford has five wins this season against teams that finished with at least 10 victories. That's as many as he had in his entire Lions career.

If Stafford can win a Super Bowl ring, he should be Hall of Fame-bound – he probably will be anyways. He was the fastest player to reach 20,000 and 30,000 and 40,000 career passing yards. He has 323 career touchdowns and 49,995 career regular-season passing yards. Stafford will become the 12th player with 50,000 passing yards in Week 1 next season and the third active player behind Atlanta’s Matt Ryan (59.735) and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers (55,360). Tom Brady leads all-time with 84,520 and Stafford isn’t getting there as he turned 34 on Monday (Feb. 7). Stafford’s 41 TD passes during the regular season were a career-high.

Stafford faced the Bengals three times in his Lions career and went 0-3 against them. He last saw them in 2017 when Detroit lost 26-17. Stafford was 19-for-35 for 203 yards, a TD, and a pick. Overall, Stafford has thrown three interceptions and been sacked five times against the Bengals. The career 63 percent passer is just 58-for-112 vs. Cincinnati, a completion percentage of 51.8 percent.

If the Rams are down by at least 10 points in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 56, that doesn’t bode well for them (obviously). Stafford had lost 26 straight starts (includes playoffs) when trailing by at least 10 points in the fourth quarter before rallying to beat the 49ers in the NFC title game. The Rams had been 0-14 under Sean McVay (includes playoffs) when trailing by at least 10 points entering the fourth quarter of games prior to that 20-17 victory.

Stafford will be the seventh quarterback to start the Super Bowl in his first season with the team. He'll try to join Tom Brady (2020 Bucs) and Trent Dilfer (2000 Ravens) as the third to win it.

For your best bets, BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) has a couple of interesting Stafford cross-sport props: His rushing yards in the game are -115 against the number of birdies that Jordan Spieth has in the first round Thursday at the PGA Tour’s WM Phoenix Open; Stafford’s total completions in the game are -130 against the number of players who finish under par (+100) in the first golf major of the season, the Masters in early April; and Stafford’s first-half passing yardage is -105 against the average speed in miles per hour of the NASCAR Daytona 500 (-125) on Feb. 20.

Stafford isn’t very mobile, rushing for 43 total yards in the regular season on 32 carries. He does have 36 yards and two scores rushing on 15 playoff carries. Just for a point of reference, Spieth had five birdies in the first round of the 2021 Phoenix Open. The average speed at the 2021 Daytona 500 was 144.4 mph. A total of 20 players finished under par at the 2021 Masters.
