There are plenty of ways to predict the future of the NFL. You can look at win totals for individual teams. You can look at the NFL futures for winning divisions if you think a team will play well in the regular season, or you can pick them to win the conference if you like their postseason form.
You can also look at players to hit certain individual metrics, and you can vote for the player awards at the end of the NFL season. One extra way to bet on the future of the NFL is by looking at the NFL Coach of the Year odds. One coach will be voted the best of the season, and it usually correlates with a quality team.
It’s not as simple as picking the head coach of the best team, though. If a team is expected to dominate, the coach does not get as much credit. In fact, the historically great coaches rarely win this award.
This year, Sean McDermott is the favorite at +800 NFL odds. Will he win the award? Below, we’ll break it down for you.
Sean McDermott Favorite to Win COTY
The Buffalo Bills are one of the best teams on paper, but McDermott still gets credit for the team’s success. He helped develop Josh Allen, and the roster isn’t so stacked that they can win without proper coaching.
McDermott has consistently gotten players to produce beyond draft status. Allen was a project, but he is now a candidate for NFL MVP.
Levi Wallace was undrafted, but he was a solid starter in the secondary. The offensive line remains solid without massive investments, and the only true player who didn’t need developing on the roster was Diggs.
The Bills remain on the rise, which is great if you want a coach to win this award. If they are the first seed in the AFC, McDermott will easily be a finalist for the award. As long as they have a solid season and win the AFC East, he will be on the hunt.
Who else has an actual shot of winning this award? Here is McDermott’s toughest competition for NFL Coach of the Year.
NFL Coach of the Year Candidates
Brandon Staley | Los Angeles Chargers
Staley is listed at +1400 for similar reasons as McDermont. The Chargers are on the rise, and Staley is in charge of coaching one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. That puts him in a position to succeed, and he will be in the discussion for the award if he lives up to the hype.
Mike McDaniel | The Miami Dolphins
A coach with good value is Mike McDaniel. First-year coaches who turn around struggling franchises are always in the hunt, and he has a great chance of turning the Miami Dolphins into a Playoff contender. If we see the Tua Tagovailoa that became an Alabama legend, McDaniel will be a big reason why.
Sean McVay | Los Angeles Rams
Sean McVay won a Super Bowl last year, but he is not in the top ten of the odds. This shows how great coaches with proven records rarely win the award. Behind him are Mike Tomlin, Bill Belichick, and Andy Reid.
COTY Best Bet
Needless to say, there are plenty of great coaches in the NFL. Is McDermott a lock to win the award? McDermott is a great coach, and he is the favorite for a reason. Keep in mind for your NFL picks that he has value, but I would not say that he is a lock.
Like every NFL postseason award, storylines impact the process. Coaches who win this award usually overcome some sort of adversity.
This is the only true thing working against McDermott. He’s not in a particularly tough division, and the roster got better this offseason. Outside of losing some offensive assistants, this team is completely on the rise.
McDermott will be in the discussion, and he will probably be the default option for plenty of voters. Unless another storyline overtakes us all, he should win the award. If so, a +800 bet will have serious payoffs at the end of the season.
