Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday, February 12, 2023 – 06:30 PM EST at State Farm Stadium

Sportsbooks try to outdo each other during the Super Bowl each year by coming up with the most unusual props – although still, the most popular one remains the coin toss.

A quick history lesson: The first-ever Super Bowl prop was made available on Jan. 26, 1986, before Super Bowl XX between the soon-to-be-legendary 1985 Chicago Bears and New England Patriots.

Those Bears were rock stars that season and a rookie defensive lineman named William Perry became a national sensation because Coach Mike Ditka allowed Perry to score goal-line TDs a few times during the regular season.

Thus, the first Super Bowl prop was simply: “Will William Perry score a Touchdown?" He did, and the books took a huge hit but it was so popular that a new form of betting on the big game was born.

Here are a few early special picks for Super Bowl 57.

Travis Kelce vs. A.J. Brown

The national popularity of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, a future Hall of Famer, went through the roof following the AFC Championship Game win over Cincinnati as Kelce said this live on the field during a CBS post-game interview: "I got some wise words for that Cincinnati mayor: Know your role and shut your mouth, you jabroni!"

The latter part of that statement, made popular by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson when he was a WWE star, was in reference to Cincinnati mayor Aftab Pureval trash-talking in the week leading up to the game by pointing out Patrick Mahomes’ 0-3 record against Joe Burrow, joking that officials have asked Burrow to take a paternity test to confirm whether he is Mahomes' father.

Pureval was gracious in defeat and admitted he "deserved" the jab Kelce gave him.

Eagles receiver A.J. Brown had a career season and is a big reason why Philadelphia is in this position after coming over via trade from Tennessee during the 2022 NFL Draft, but Brown isn’t well known outside of Philadelphia or Nashville.

Kelce also has the added benefit of being involved in the first brother vs. brother Super Bowl among players as Jason Kelce is a Pro Bowl center for the Eagles.

I doubt both guys are shown during both songs listed below, but there’s no doubt in my mind Kelce is shown first in one of the two (bet void if neither is shown).

Over-Under 2.5 Players To Have A Passing Attempt

This one is interesting as it’s set at over-under 2.5. Needless to say, if either Patrick Mahomes or Jalen Hurts leaves the game injured for a series, this is surely going over – their backups, respectively, are Chad Henne and Gardner Minshew.

Both are veterans so neither head coach would be afraid of throwing the ball if the need arises. Henne did have to attempt seven passes in the Divisional Round against Jacksonville when Mahomes left for a bit with his injured ankle.

Only Hurts has attempted a pass this postseason for Philadelphia, and only Hurts and Minshew did during the regular season – i.e., no trick plays. Punter Tommy Townsend attempted one regular-season pass for Kansas City but I highly doubt that happens in a Super Bowl.

Still, we have to lean over on the chance one of the QBs leaves injured or the game is a blowout and a backup QB gets to throw a pass or two. Maybe there will be a trick play.

Over/Under 11.5 for the Jersey Number of the Player To Score the First Touchdown

At the top online books, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Miles Sanders are the +650 favorites to score the game’s first touchdown, followed by:

  • Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (+700)
  • KC rookie running back Isiah Pacheco (+800)
  • Eagles receiver A.J. Brown (+900)

Hurts wears No. 1, Sanders 25, Kelce 87, Pacheco 10, and Brown 11.

If we go Under, we also get:

  • Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon (1)
  • KC receiver Juju Smith-Schuster (9)
  • KC receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (11)
  • Eagles wideout DeVonta Smith (6)

Other Over players on the Chiefs include:

  • QB Patrick Mahomes (15)
  • Receiver Mecole Hardman (17)
  • Receiver Kadarius Toney (19)

Although both WRs were hurt in the AFC title game.

Over Eagles players also could include:

  • RB Kenneth Gainwell (14)
  • Boston Scott (35)
  • Receiver Quez Watkins (14)
  • Tight end Dallas Goedert (88)

Not going to list defensive guys.

The fact we get both teams’ top wideouts plus Hurts means we lean Under.
