Los Angeles Chargers vs. Arizona Cardinals

Chargers Can't Get the Job Done

A visit to San Francisco followed by a date with the Chiefs at home has set the Chargers back to where they have gone from being a division-winning contender to a .500 club competing for a playoff spot.

The 22-16 loss to the 49ers was particularly hard as the Bolts held a six-point lead at the half, however, the offense got stuck in neutral and was shut out in the second half. The only saving grace for those backing the Bolts was the 8 ½ point head start the books gave the dog lovers.

Last week, it was more of the same as LA put up a battle, ending the first half with a seven-point lead. But once again, the second half was another story as the Mahomes-to-Kelce connection could not be stopped. The All-Pro tight end had six receptions for 115 yards and three touchdowns, Mahomes launched for 329 yards through the air, and the KC express ran roughshod over the Chargers' run defense for 163 yards.

Justin Herbert flashed glimpses of that big arm that he’s known for and ended with two touchdowns, 280 yards, and one interception. But the Chargers’ offensive line did not keep the pocket clean as Herbert was sacked five times in the Bolts’ 30-27 loss to the Chiefs.

Cardinals Murked in Mexico

The Cardinals took a siesta on Monday night in Mexico City courtesy of a 38-10 trouncing at the hands of the 49ers. But Kyler Murray has been inactive, nursing a hamstring injury, and had to cede the reins of the offense to backup Colt McCoy for the second consecutive week. San Francisco’s defense is one of the best in the business so it is unlikely a gimpy Murray would have made much of a difference.

McCoy ended with 24-of-34 passing for 218 yards and a pick while the ground game tallied just 62 yards with James Conner getting Arizona’s only score.

The Cardinals’ defense was overmatched by Jimmy Garoppolo and the surgical passing attack of the Niners, allowing Jimmy G to strike twice to George Kittle and twice more to Brandon Aiyuk. But San Francisco also gave the Redbirds a healthy dose of the ground-and-pound with seven rushers accounting for 159 yards.

"That was a really good team," Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury said. "We knew we had to play as good as we've played all year. And I thought they played really physical in that second half and found a way to make plays."

Chargers vs. Cardinals: Pick and Prediction

The Cardinals will return home for this matchup against Justin Herbert and the Chargers but the big question is whether or not Kyler Murray will be under center. He has been nursing a hamstring injury and appears on track for suiting up. This doesn’t mean he will, but the fact he was close to playing last week suggests he will be back in the pocket this week.

Although Arizona’s 4-7 record will be hard to overcome, the wild card positions are still up for grabs which means if Murray can go, he will go. The Cards are not so out of the playoff picture that head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, will err on the side of caution and sit him.

We should also note that while the 49ers trained at the high altitude of Mexico City leading up to Monday night’s contest, the Cardinals stayed in the desert which could explain why the Arizona defense melted like butter in a blast furnace in the second half, getting outscored 21-0.

The Cards will miss their tight end, Zach Ertz, for the remainder of the season but if Murray plays, we are getting excellent value as of this Tuesday morning writing. We should also note that the Bolts have a lousy defense, much like their opponents, and are ranked 29th allowing 25.8 points per game.

The Cardinals will not be facing the tough-as-nails San Francisco defensive unit this week and should be able to at least make a game of it. This looks like a good spot to take the home dog and the over. For all residents of the Golden State, check out our California betting sites.
