The Seattle Seahawks are the only sensible NFL pick for Sunday’s matchup with the now-eliminated Chicago Bears.

Chicago Bears vs. Seattle Seahawks

Sunday, December 26, 2021- 4:05 PM EST at Lumen Field

It’s not easy to get eliminated from the NFL playoffs these days. With the regular season extended to 17 games, and with seven teams from each conference making it in, you have to be pretty awful to miss out at this stage.

The Chicago Bears are pretty awful; at 4-10 SU and ATS, they’re one of just five teams who are out of the postseason race heading into Week 16. The Seattle Seahawks (5-9 SU, 7-7 ATS) will probably join them before long.

But the Seahawks aren’t in the same category as the Bears; their talent level is much better than their record would suggest, and they’re easily the right NFL pick for Sunday’s home game – even more so now that they’ve dipped from –7 to –6.5 on the NFL odds board at Heritage Sports (visit our Heritage Sports Review).

Missed It by That Much

Apparently, there are those who would differ from my assessment. The consensus reports at press time show 100 percent support for the Bears, and that’s understandable; the Seahawks will be playing on a very short week after Tuesday’s frustrating 20-10 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams (–7.5 at home), which all but snuffed out Seattle’s flickering playoff hopes. Again, though, this is the Bears we’re talking about.

This is not a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by eagle-eyed bettors. Football Outsiders have Chicago pegged at 4.0 Estimated Wins this year, which is exactly how many actual wins they’ve managed.

The Seahawks check-in at 7.0 EW, having lost twice in overtime and twice more by a field goal or less. Missing QB Russell Wilson for three games didn’t help either – although Seattle did cover all three with Geno Smith under center.

Don’t-Care Bears

This is more about the Bears, though. We’ve reached that magical point in the season where teams with nothing to play for, traveling long distances to perform in less than ideal conditions, are easy fade targets. And wouldn’t you know it, Sunday’s forecast calls for snow over Lumen Field at kick-off.

Obviously, this would be better for us if the Bears were a warm-weather team, but still. The important thing is they have to play a game they don’t really want to be playing. The Bears are about as dysfunctional as teams get; head coach Matt Nagy could easily have been fired by now, but it appears ownership is willing to let the season play out – maybe to save some money, maybe so they can get rid of Nagy and GM Ryan Pace in one fell swoop.

Now you’re asking this team to travel west, over Christmas, during a raging pandemic, to play a meaningless game in lousy weather, in front of Seattle’s famously loud fans – and they will be loud this Sunday, even if things haven’t gone quite according to plan this year. All this, plus the extra-half point off the magic number 7? Yes, please.
