San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Sunday, November 21, 2021 – 01:00 PM EST at TIAA Bank Field Stadium

A Monday night win for the 49ers against their divisional rivals kept their slim hopes of a post-season spot alive while the Jaguars are looking set on a top 3 pick in the draft.

Despite that big win for the 49ers, the NFL odds have them under a touchdown favorite on the spread line in this matchup, with a low total around the mid-40s having dropped lower during the week.

Can the 49ers Keep On Winning?

Logically you would think after beating a team ranked in the top 10 of Superbowl favorites that beating the Jaguars would be an easy task, but this season has been totally unpredictable so far this year so it wouldn’t be a huge shock to see it go the other way.

Jimmy Garoppolo is clinging on to the starting spot by his fingernails, but they’re winning games with him there, so at the moment there’s no need to move on to Trey Lance. He’s been fine, as he always is, but they’re winning by leaning on the run game and short passes to men in space who can make the most of having the ball in their arms.

The main man all year has been Deebo Samuel who leads the league in YAC and is second behind Cooper Kupp. He has been sensational this year and part of his success is his unique spot in the offense, he moves across the formation and you can’t use your top CB to cover him. When he gets the ball in his hands he’s very difficult to show whether it’s a reception or from the backfield.

George Kittle is back and dominating people as he showed when holding off Von Miller with relative ease on Monday and will help open up lanes once again for the running backs who will be playing at RB for them is up in the air at the moment with Elijah Mitchell having surgery this week on a broken finger. They still expect him back, if not then Jeff Wilson gets back into the main role.

Will the Jags Pull of the Upset?

The Jags' game against the Colts last week was deceptively close as they couldn’t stop them early on as they leaped out to a 17-0 in the first quarter before sitting back and allowing the Jags to get close come to the final whistle.

They at least showed some spirit to keep going and if it wasn’t for a lot of dropped passes things could have been different. Trevor Lawrence has only had 2 games with a QBR over 50, so it’s safe to say his debut year hasn’t gone as well as he would have hoped. It’s not been easy for him with the team around him and the coaching, but he has shown flashes of brilliance.

Marvin Jones is their main deep threat, having said that he’s not scored for a month and could do with bouncing back to help his young QB. Laviska Shenault could be their version of Deebo with better coaching, he’s good with the ball in his hands but doesn’t seem to get enough touches.

The leading receiver for them last week was Dan Arnold who they target frequently since bringing him in with a trade from the Panthers earlier in the season. He’s had at least 7 targets in each of their last 3 games and 60 yards in each of them. James Robinson played last week coming off a heel injury and should be fine to play in this one.

How Does This Play Out?

Talent and coaching wise it’s impossible not to take the 49ers to win this and to cover the spread. However, they are losing out on rest, travel, and the fact that they’re coming off a big win with the Vikings on deck next week.

The Jaguars' only reason to keep on winning is the need for the head coach to keep his job. For the good of the franchise, they should be losing as many as possible but that doesn’t come naturally to players. I’m taking the better coaching.
