Jeff Ennis and John Greenway, joint chairmen of the All Party Racing and Bloodstock Committee, have suggested other EU member states to copy the UK\’s betting industry model in the consumer’s interest.
“The UK horseracing betting market is the most competitive in Europe, even more so following the introduction of betting exchanges,” said Greenway in a letter circulated at the committee’s annual dinner in London.
“This is in sharp contrast to the position in other member states, where state-sponsored, pool-betting organisations have a monopoly of the entire horseracing betting market, with other betting operations prohibited by statute.”
Ennis and Greenway have also expressed grave concerns about the EC\’s investigation over the sale of the Tote on possible ‘state aid’ grounds.
“It’s beyond us that the EC should feel it necessary to carry out an investigation, when the Tote is responsible for only three per cent of the UK gambling market, and has only a minimal involvement in gambling services in other member states.”
