Robbie and Tom Waterhouse charged with telephone betting offences

The two leading bookmakers will have to answer multiple charges relating to telephone betting activities, after that Racing NSW stewards opened an inquiry in January into an irregular betting pattern by the pair at races at Wyong and Gosford late last year.

Under NSW bookmaking rules, a bookmaker must hold a liability on a race in order to lay off by telephone with another betting firm.

Routine checks by stewards of betting sheets showed that the Waterhouses had accepted bets from big punter Sean Bartholomew, which were then laid off over the phone with interstate operators less than 30 seconds later, before the original bets were cancelled.

Robbie Waterhouse has already served a nine-month suspension over the same charge in 2002, three years after his return to the ring following 14 years on the sidelines.

In 1984, the racehorse Bold Personality was substituted for the inferior performed nag Fine Cotton in a race at Eagle Farm, Brisbane. Fine Cotton won narrowly after being bet from 33/1 down to the odds of 7/2. Robbie Waterhouse was warned off for having had prior knowledge of the scam and placing bets on Fine Cotton.
