Based on data from the New Jersey Division of Gambling Enforcement, online casinos in the state won $158.9 million in April. While this is slightly lower than the record-breaking $166 million earned in March, it still stands as the second-highest monthly total in New Jersey’s history.

Just as New Jersey sports betting has excelled recently, the eight online casino operators have now won at least $150 million from players in four of the past five months (including April).

Online Casino Numbers Up Year-Over-Year in New Jersey

Comparing year-on-year figures, April 2023 saw an impressive increase of 16.1% in revenue. Over the past five months, online casinos in New Jersey have consistently generated revenue of at least $150 million, with February being the only exception.

The online casino brands operating under Borgata’s license have maintained the top spot in the New Jersey market for more than two years. In April, these 11 brands, including BetMGM Casino, generated a revenue of $43.1 million.

Last month, taxes from online casinos accounted for more than 49% of all gambling-related taxes statewide. Online casinos contributed $93 million to state coffers in the first four months of 2023. Taxes paid by the other three gambling industries total $94 million.

New Jersey Physical Casinos Holding Their Own

While online casinos are popular in New Jersey, there is no cause for concern regarding the state’s nine physical casinos. They continue to perform well and remain profitable alongside the success of online gambling.

Take, for instance, Atlantic City’s brick-and-mortar casinos. They won more than $230 million from gamblers in April 2023. That was a 1.6% year-over-year decline, but still the market’s best month of the year so far.

James Plousis, chair of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, the state agency that oversees the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), said he remains optimistic about Atlantic City’s immediate future, despite the small retraction in land-based play.

“Even though April’s casino win lagged compared to the same period last year, it was still the second strongest April in 11 years,” he said.

New Jersey Celebrating 10 Years Since Online Casinos Legalized

The online casino market in New Jersey continues to thrive as it approaches a significant milestone of 10 years since its legalization. As of April, the cumulative revenue generated by NJ online casinos has surpassed $6 billion.

New Jersey holds the distinction of being the first state to legalize online casinos back in November 2013. Since then, internet casinos in the state have generated over $6.1 billion in revenue, contributing more than $1 billion in taxes to the state’s coffers. This highlights the significant economic impact and success of the online casino industry in New Jersey.

But that’s not the only reason to celebrate. Resorts Casino Hotel is marking its 45th anniversary later this month. Resorts holds the distinction of being the first casino to open in Atlantic City back in May 1978.

And both Hard Rock and Ocean Casino, which opened their doors on June 27, 2018, will be commemorating five years in business next month. Additionally, Borgata will be hosting its 20th-anniversary celebration in July.
