The British bookmaker favours the Republican Party to retain control of the Senate but to lose the House of Representatives to the Democrats at next month\’s elections. The Democratic party is favoured to win the presidency in 2008.

Ironically, the law promoted by the Republicans to stop US citizens from gambling online may come back to bite the party at the November elections. According to industry observers, millions of American online gamblers are angry enough to get politically motivated and vote against the Republicans on the basis of this one issue.

Another irony of the UIGE Act is that it contains exemptions for state lotteries, just like disgraced lobbyst Jack Abramoff would have wanted. All of this while the Act\’s sponsors want the Americans to believe that it was the Abramoff\’s conviction on corruption charges to open the way for the passage of the bill.

In the meantime, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is reportedly pleased with the initial impact on internet gambling of the UIGE Act.

According to his press secretary Caroline Weyforth, the shareholders of online betting companies who were betting on US authorities to look the other way have been proven wrong.

“We started off with Internet gambling being illegal and they found a way around it – we\’ve stopped that,” she said.

Elsewhere, the Daily Racing Form reported that the California Horse Racing Board is scheduled to review the license applications of XpressBet, Youbet.com and TVG, amid debates over how much of the telephone and internet betting revenue should be shared with horsemen and whether the account-wagering companies should be required to share their signals.
