The New York State Legislature passed a bill that would allow residents to open accounts at OTBs and place bets via the internet or from cellular phones. The bill if signed into law by Governor George Pataki would become effective June 30, 2007 until June 30, 2009.
“I am glad that both houses have passed a bill that brings the law in line with what racing fans and most industry players agree must be part of the future of racing,” said Raymond V. Casey, Chairman of New York City OTB.
“OTB has always been about delivering convenience to its players, and we hope this bill becomes law and we can continue to do that in a modern manner,” he added.
In separate news, the New York State Police announced to have creacked an illegal sports betting operation which used a service in Costa Rica to accept bets over the telephone. According to the DA\’s office, the illegal operation took over $10 million in bets between January 2005 and April 2006.
Elsewhere, Delaware Senator George Bunting has proposed a bill that would legalize sports betting in the state, taking advantage of the exemption from the federal ban which since 1992 prohibits the expansion of sports betting in the United States.
