Germany to face a EC challenge over the withdrawal of Bwin\’s betting license

According to the Financial Times, the European Commission is likely to come to the rescue of the Austrian online bookmaker.

Commission officials said the decision by the interior ministry of Saxony to revoke Bwin\’s betting licence will face particularly close scrutiny by Brussels as they have “serious doubts” it was allowed under European Union law. Private sports betting operators such as Bwin are protected by EU rules on the freedom to provide cross border services, set out in Article 49 of the EC Treaty.
