According to a MECN study based on the results of a survey among industry experts, the fast growing German betting market, now totaling an estimated $2.6bn annually, will grow to $6bn annually by 2010.

The sports betting market currently accounts for about 5%-10% of the total German gambling market, with more than 70% of betting sales performed by private operators.

The number of private betting offices, currently estimated at 2,500, is growing rapidly despite the legal status of the private betting companies remains unclear.

Decisive in this regard and for the future developement of the market, will be the ruling the Federal Constitutional Court is expected to render in early 2006.

Two are the potential scenarios: a more likely libelar ruling, which will drive the enormous growth of private providers, or a return to the old model, where state-run providers will control the sports betting market.
