Germany betting boom

Hundreds of German entrepreneurs are setting up betting shops to cash in on the expected betting boom for the 2006 World Cup hosted in Germany.

In some regions betting shops are doubled in the last 6 months, taking advantage of an apparent change in law, which makes legal to open up a betting shop. “Everyone expects a betting boom and this is part of the reason people want the law cleared up,” a betting lawyer said.

In Germany it had been illegal to set up a betting shop because sport gambling was a national monopoly. A series of recent legal rulings appears to have changed that.
