Graham Calvert, a greyhound trainer who lost over £2m after asking William Hill to stop taking his bets, now says the bookmaker should reimburse his losses for allowing an addict to keep on betting with them.
Calvert closed his account but was allowed to re-open another one shortly thereafter. “The fact is that I did try to go through the right procedures and I was let down,” he told the BBC.
William Hill denies any wrongdoing: “We will be fighting it in court in the most vigorous way possible.”
Gamcare Chairman Anthony Jennens commented: “It is obviously impossible to exclude somebody or to self-exclude somebody from all gambling outlets from anywhere in the world. If they can’t get into a bookies or a casinos they can go online and gamble with an unregistered site in Antigua.”
