The final Formula 1 race before the summer break takes place at the Hungaroring in Hungary this weekend. There was controversy in the previous race as Hamilton took out Verstappen and managed to cut the lead to just 8 points, instead of the previous 33 before the race.

Was Hamilton’s Penalty Too Lenient?

For those that missed the race, or know the result but not what went down, well this is what happened. Essentially Hamilton hit Max Verstappen, sending the Dutch driver hurtling pretty fast across the gravel pit, before eventually coming to a stop at the tyre wall. Verstappen was lucky to come away from the incident seriously uninjured. Lewis Hamilton continued to race on, before eventually been told he was to receive a 10 second penalty for the crash he caused to Verstappen.

Of course Hamilton went on to take his 10 second penalty and win the race, which really put asour taste in Red Bulls mouth given the fact they, and most other teams and fans alike have argued that Hamilton’s 10 second penalty was perhaps too lenient and even a 15 second penalty would have been better, maybe a 20 second penalty was probably most fair. Some people will go as far as to say he should have been disqualified, although the majority of them are most likely Red Bull fans.

Red Bull have lodged a request for the FIA to review the Hamilton incidentand appeal the 10 second penalty in favour of a longer one, which preferably would change his finishing position from 1st to perhaps 3rd/4th, which would give them back some vital points on Hamilton. At the time of writing the request has just been lodged but with the current standings, Max Verstappen is 8 points ahead of Hamilton.

Formula 1 Race Pick

Max Verstappen will be out for some revenge this weekend at the Hungaroring. He appeared to be okay after his crash at Silverstone and reported only a few bruises. During the week Verstappen went through a grueling 24hour race to make sure his body was in peak physical condition ahead of this weekend’s race, in short Verstappen is out for blood and won’t let anyone get in his way in his quest for victory. We believe his Red Bull is much faster than the Mercedes as this track is much more accommodating to the Red Bulls than the Mercedes.

Red Bull have been king at the low gravity circuits and expect this trend to continue on Saturday as we expect Verstappen to qualify on pole position at odds of 1.70. They’re a little low but it’s essentially a two horse race between himself and Hamilton and we think Verstappen should be much shorter and in fact be in around the 1.60 odds range.Even though Hamilton has won 4 of the previous 5 Hungaroring races, they simple haven’t got the best car anymore and this dominance is shifting. Verstappen already stopped a few Hamilton winning track streaksthis season, and he can do again so this Sunday in the race.
