Chancellor Gordon Brown has deferred the announcement on the taxation structure for the remote gambling industry until Budget 2007, to allow more time to look at possible options.

The news was welcomed by the Remote Gambling Association\’s Chief Executive Clive Hawkswood: “Hopefully this additional time will enable the Treasury to identify a regime that both they and we will find viable.”

Brown also reiterated the Government\’s aim to sell off the Tote, although the European Commission is still investigating whether the sale of the state-owned pool betting company to Racing Trust constitutes illegal state aid.
