State media announced that China has detained 15,000 people suspected of gambling offences since the crackdown on illegal gambling began in December.
Police in the southern provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi have blocked citizens who were going to gamble across the border and arrested those who organized these gambling trips. More than 80 casinos had closed along China\’s southern border with Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam.
While illegal, gambling remains a way of life for many Chinese who bet on soccer matches, horse races and cock and cricket fights.
