Betfair spokesman Andrew Twaits has revealed the exchange already had 2000 active customers Down Under and although he predicts a slow start of the marketing campaign, the firm expects an influx of new customers over the next couple of weeks.
In separate news, controversial bookmaker Robbie Waterhouse said NSW bookmakers should be allowed to view Betfair\’s site and those of corporate betting agencies based in the territories while they are operating on racetracks.
“It makes it harder for us bookmakers to compete. We cannot know what our competitors are doing,” he said.
Tim Ryan, Chief Executive of the Australian Bookmakers\’ Association, said it is ludicrous members do not have access to the internet.
Ryan has worked with the NSW Bookmakers to develop a software that enables punters with accounts to bet in a new “real time” market and believes this new service would curb the growth of Betfair and corporate bookmakers.
