A sharp rise in online betting for Pari Mutuel Urbain

The French horse racing betting monopoly, which is Europe’s leading offtrack betting group, reported EUR 250 million of sales for its online betting service in 2005, a sharp rise from EUR 143 million in 2004, the first year the company offered bets on the internet.

PMU announced a 6 per cent rise in total revenues up to EUR 8bn. Profit figures were not available, but the company posted a net profit of EUR 516m in 2004.

Francaise des Jeux, the casino and lotto operator, confirmed that online gambling is a big growth area as the company attracted 350,000 new online gamblers in 2005.
