Utah Utes vs. UCLA Bruins

Saturday, October 08, 2022 – 03:30 PM EDT at Rose Bowl

It’s lunchtime football on the West Coast, midafternoon action for the rest of the country, and a top 20 battle for everyone as the Utah Utes and UCLA Bruins meet with some major Pac-12 Conference Championship connotations.

With the Pac-12 doing away with its former North/South Division alignment, this game could ultimately prove to be an elimination game for the league championship, and the NCAAF odds for Utah and UCLA clash reflect that.

Defense is the Utes’ Calling Card

The next two Saturdays will make or break the Utes’ season. Kyle Whittingham’s crew follows up this trip to LA by hosting USC in Week 7, and taking down both the Bruins and Trojans would help everyone forget that season-opening upset loss at Florida.

Utah has won and covered all four games since that defeat to the Gators, doing so with a defense that has an eye for the pigskin and is among the top teams in the country in turnover margin.

Bruins All About the Offense

Chip Kelly has UCLA still sporting an undefeated record, and proved that unblemished mark was not just due to a light slate by taking out a solid Washington Huskies team this past week as a 3-point underdog at Bookmaker.

The 40-32 final wasn’t really as close as the score might look, and it marked the fourth time this year for the Bruins to eclipse the 40-point barrier. They rank 14th in the country averaging 41.4 points per game.

Utah Looking to Extend Streak in Series

This rivalry has only been developing over the last 15 years or so, and with UCLA’s rumored exodus from the Pac-12, there may not be much more life in a series that has seen the Utes win and cover the last five meetings, four of those as the favorite.

Unmovable Object or Unstoppable Force?

Utah is favored once again with the spread running 4-4½ at top-rated sportsbooks and the total at 64. The Utes have also been putting up points, but neither side will put up enough to hit this scoreboard target; play the total to come up short in a 31-27 Utah victory.

Appalachian State Mountaineers vs. Texas State Bobcats

Saturday, October 08, 2022 - 07:00 PM EDT at Bobcat Stadium

When the Appalachian State Mountaineers traveled to the Lone Star State a few weeks ago, they went home with one of the season’s top upsets after taking down then-No. 6 Texas A&M to stun an Aggies team that entered the season with hopes of making the College Football Playoffs.

The Mountaineers are back in the Lone Star State again on the Week 6 schedule, only this time they’re out to avoid being upset by the Texas State Bobcats in a Sun Belt Conference matchup.

Odds Consistent with Previous Meetings

The numbers for this matchup are eerily similar to when Appalachian State was at Texas A&M in Week 2, just reversed to burden the Mountaineers with 19-point chalk while the scoreboard mark is 55½.

Those spread and totals figures are close to the numbers in the most recent contest, indeed, the last few meetings, when Appalachian State was a 3-TD favorite and hung a 38-17 decision on Texas State, giving the Mountaineers their sixth win in as many encounters with the Bobcats.

App State Rolls in Week 5, Texas State Rolled

Appalachian State bounced back from an upset loss to James Madison with a 49-0 shellacking of The Citadel last week, the game ruled a ‘no contest’ when the Mountaineers jumped out to a 35-0 first half lead and eventually covered as 39½point home favorites.

It was a very different Saturday afternoon for the Bobcats who were trounced 40-13 on the road by that same James Madison squad that popped Appalachian State, and the Dukes exposed some poor run defense on the part of Texas State.

Warm Temps in the Forecast

Yeah, the calendar might say it’s autumn, but the Lone Star State often doesn’t pay attention to seasons and this Saturday is going to feel more like summer to most folks with the weatherman predicting humid temps in the upper-80s under partly cloudy skies at kickoff.

Texas State has managed to stay inside the spread four of the last five get-togethers, but all five failed to reach the totals, and that’s the right college football pick this time around as well.
