Editor’s Note: Texas A&M backed out of the Gator Bowl after a COVID-19 outbreak left the team without enough players

The 10-3 Wake Forest Demon Deacons are one of the most unique teams in the country thanks to their one-of-a-kind offense and ability to score points quickly. They finished just 6-7 against the spread because their defense is one of the worst in the country. But they’re undefeated in providing us entertainment.

Texas A&M had another disappointing season, going 8-4 and covering the spread in seven of their 12 games. They’re looking towards the future as an amazing recruiting haul is on the way. One last dominant defensive performance to end the year could further brighten their outlook.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Texas A&M Aggies

Friday, December 31, 2021 – 11:00 AM EST at TIAA Bank Field

Wake Will Cover

The only thing these teams have in common is they're currently ranked at the bottom of the top-25 rankings. Texas A&M was wildly inconsistent this season, with four losses as favorites. They also pulled the upset of the season as they defeated Alabama 41-38.

What's frustrating about the Aggies is their inability to rely on significant NFL talent across several positions. Running backs Isaiah Spiller and Devon Achane are phenomenal home-run threats from any position on the field. Receivers Ainias Smith and Jalen Wydermyer will be significant NFL contributors early in their careers.

Yet, the Aggies produced an inefficient passing game and couldn't solely rely on their ground game. It's especially notable that several of their best players may sit and further limit their ability to score. Backup Blake Bost will start after departures have left the team barren of experience.

That will determine this game as the Demon Deacons have shown they can score on anyone.

Expect Points

Going with the Wake cover, it's important to point out just how effective the Demon Deacons are at moving the ball. Sam Hartman is an elite collegiate passer, boasting almost 4,000 yards and 36 touchdowns despite playing in the ACC. He'll find success against an A&M defense that surrendered 306, 369, and 408 yards against the best passing teams they faced.

The bigger question is how well can the Aggies score against Wake's 87th-ranked scoring defense. Bost should find large passing windows and simply needs to execute. But that's something his predecessor failed to do.

I'm taking a low-confidence college football pick on the over here, simply relying on Wake's explosive offense and lacking defense to create a truly fun game to watch.
