Utah State Aggies vs. Oregon State Beavers

Saturday, December 18, 2021 – 07:30 PM EST at SoFi Stadium

One of the first games of this year’s bowl season will also be one that has the most interesting name. The L.A. Bowl is sponsored by late-night talk show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel. The funnyman did a recent interview in which he said, “Who is playing in this game of mine? I forget.” To refresh Kimmel’s memory and fill in everyone else, Mountain West champion Utah State will face Oregon State of the Pac-12 in Saturday’s indoor contest in Inglewood, California

Experienced and Prolific

Utah State will be facing a Power Five conference member in a bowl for the first time since 1961 when the Aggies played Baylor in the Gotham Bowl.

The Aggies have won two straight, both by 25 points or more, and have won seven of the last eight. Utah State will be looking to tie the school record for wins with its eleventh victory, a mark it last hit in 2018. The Aggies improved by nine games over last season, which ties for the best jump in FBS this season. They’ve set school records for touchdown passes, passing yards and road wins.

The Aggies are led by senior Deven Thompkins, who set the school single-season record for receiving yards, with 1,589. He also had six straight 100-yard games. Quarterback Logan Bonner has a school record of 36 touchdown passes and 3,560 yards. Utah State is among the national leaders in passing offense, scoring offense, and total offense. The defense is also among the top 10 in tackles for loss and fewest red zone touchdowns allowed.

Despite playing a major conference team, Utah State is the school with the edge in postseason experience. The Aggies have 28 players who have been in a bowl game, 13 who have played in multiple bowls, and 10 who have started a bowl.

Crashing the Party

Oregon State is used to finishing in a lower tier of the Pac-12, but the Beavers have put things together this year. Oregon State finished third in the North Division and entered the final weekend of the year still alive in the divisional race.

Oregon State was a perfect 6-0 at home and 1-5 on the road, but the Beavers are returning to the site of their lone road win, 45-27 over USC in late September. The Beavers also had a home win over eventual Pac-12 champion Utah this season. Oregon State fans and alumni are reportedly snapping up the tickets, with several players on the roster coming from the Southern California area.

The Beavers still have not replaced defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar, fired in early November, and don’t expect to have a new coach in place until January. Former inside linebacker coach Trent Bray will continue as interim coordinator.

Oregon State got good news on the personnel front, as the team announced that no players intend to opt-out of the bowl. Linebacker Avery Roberts will miss the game after having surgery. Receiver Tre'Shaun Harrison will have to sit out the first half of the game after getting ejected in the last game.

The Pick

Oregon State’s status as a Pac-12 member seems to hold a great deal of weight with oddsmakers and bettors. Despite the 10-win season and conference title, Utah State is an underdog by more than a touchdown.

For your college football pick, look for the Aggies to make a statement against one of the big boys.
