Both teams have a strong betting profile for us to consider as we preview how they stack up. We have you covered from every angle of this matchup. Let’s dig in.
Utah Utes vs. San Diego State Aztecs

- Over/Under 44.5 (-110)
- Moneyline - Utah -300, San Diego State +250
Here’s a look at the preview between Utah and San Diego State for Week 3.
San Diego State Offense vs. Utah Defense
The Aztecs are all about the run game. Their completion rate is an abysmal 48% for the season, and the offense has created almost double the yards on the ground. But few teams create a production on the ground.
Star rusher Greg Bell has accumulated 275 yards and two scores on 38 carries. Bell was once a productive backup at Nebraska before assuming the job at SDSU. Now in the lead role, it's possible Bell eclipses 1,000 yards by the midpoint of the season if his 7.5-yard average continues.
Utah has a decent run defense but must play big this week. Loading up the box isn't nearly enough to stop the Aztecs, who have a sound approach to blocking with a veteran line.
Utah Offense vs. San Diego State Defense
The individual parts of the Utah offense are more interesting than the total unit. Charlie Brewer has been acceptable as a starter but nothing special. The rushing combination of Tavion Thomas and Micah Bernard have been as statistically impressive as anyone, but not enough as Utah sits at 1-1.
Brewer has to take advantage of the Aztecs' poor pass defense. Only a handful of teams have given up more yards this season. Thus far, the Aztecs' foes favor throwing and abandoning the run because there's more efficiency that route.
San Diego State must simply be better to survive. Miscommunications must end in Week 3.
Utah has struggled to help bettors, covering just three of their last nine spreads. The over has hit in four of their last five as their defense has been more porous than expected. The Utes have won their last five against the Aztecs.
San Diego State has covered eight of their last 12 games, and the under has hit in 12 of their last 17 matchups.
Utah hasn't played overly well despite winning both of their two first games. San Diego State will find success on the ground and have more luck slowing Utah's mediocre offense enough to cover at home.
