UCLA Bruins vs. Oregon Ducks

Saturday, October 22, 2022 – 03:30 PM EDT at Autzen Stadium

UCLA vs. Oregon Analysis

UCLA has established itself as a national power over the last few weeks with victories over No. 15 Washington and No. 11 Utah. The Bruins are now coming off of their bye week and ranked No. 9 in the nation with No. 10 Oregon in their crosshairs.

Senior quarterback, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, was positively surgical in his last performance, connecting on 18-of-23 for 299 yards with four passing and one rushing touchdown in UCLA’s 42-32 victory over the Utes as three-point home dogs.

It was a special win for the Bruins, as Utah had defeated the Bruins in their previous five meetings by an average of 27 points. And in doing so, Thompson-Robinson became UCLA’s career passing touchdown king.

"I definitely wanted this one. We all know the history between UCLA and Utah, the point differential has been crazy," said Thompson-Robinson. "So, we knew the beast at hand coming in here, and I think my boys went out there and went to work."

Ducks Offense Continues to Shine in the Desert

The Ducks have come a long way since their 49-3 blowout loss to Georgia to start the season. Naturally, the Bulldogs are the best opponent they faced or will face, but Oregon’s offense has caught fire and is averaging nearly 50 points per game over their last 5 contests.

Oregon is also coming off of its bye and is 3-0 in the conference and 5-1 overall with a 4-2 ATS mark. In their last outing, the Ducks traveled to Tucson to meet Arizona and came away with a 39-22 victory in the desert, easily covering the 13 ½ point impost.

Duck’s senior quarterback, Bo Nix, had a solid performance in completing 20-of-25 passes for 265 yards but failed to connect on a passing touchdown. However, Oregon’s rushing attack was relentless, piling up 306 yards and 7 touchdowns in the 17-point win.

"We were able to impose our will at times tonight," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. "We were able to run the ball the way we wanted to run the ball. Our guys played with physicality, and that's what we're looking for. We definitely saw that."

UCLA vs. Oregon: Pick and Prediction

The Ducks have home-field advantage and have won the last three games versus UCLA including last season’s 34-31 victory over the Bruins at the Rose Bowl as one-point road dogs.

More importantly, and according to top-rated sportsbooks, these teams have alternated covers over their last four meetings and if the pattern continues then UCLA would win the money at the betting windows.

Both teams have punishing ground attacks with UCLA ranked No. 20 in the nation, averaging 211.5 yards per game, while Oregon is even better at No. 10 and churning 241.7 yards per contest.

I’m not sure if the Bruins will come away with the outright victory here, but it wouldn’t shock me if they did. Both teams have top 20 run-stop units which should mitigate those ground-and-pound attacks to at least some degree.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson

The edge goes to UCLA when we are focusing on aerial attacks. The Bruins signal caller, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, has muscled his way into the Heisman Trophy conversation.

Thompson-Robinson leads the 25th-ranked passing attack, averaging nearly 295 yards per game, against Oregon’s anemic passing defense, ranked 113th entering this matchup.

And that is where UCLA will take charge of this matchup and Oregon will be forced to counter with Bo Nix slinging the pigskin just to keep pace.

A running attack is fine as long you are not playing from behind, which is why I believe this game will be decided through their air and the score will soar because of it. Bet the Bruins with the points, over the posted total, and a bit on the UCLA moneyline for your NCAAF picks.
