Toledo Rockets vs. Ohio Bobcats
Saturday, December 3, 2022 – 12:00 PM EST at Ford Field
The Toledo Rockets will take on the Ohio Bobcats in the MAC Championship. The Bobcats might be 9-3 on the season, but the Rockets are still the favorites heading into this game, at 7-5 on the season.
The Rockets were 7-3 at one point during the season. But after two losses to close out the regular season, the Rockets are now 7-5. On the other hand, Ohio has won seven straight games. The Bobcats haven’t lost since October 1. Now they’ll play a game to decide the MAC in December.
Can we trust the Ohio Bobcats to keep their winning streak alive and win the MAC Championship? Here are our NCAAF picks and predictions for Saturday’s matchup between the Ohio Bobcats and Toledo Rockets.
Will DeQuan Finn Help Toledo Get Back On Track?
Quarterback DeQuan Finn has been dealing with an ankle injury. That’s ultimately why Toledo lost its last two games of the regular season. Finn didn’t play against Bowling Green in a 42-35 loss and only had 11 passing attempts against Western Michigan in a 20-14 loss.
Tucker Gleason was starting as a freshman for the Rockets but had a QBR of 36.9 on the season. Meanwhile, Finn has a 60.2 QBR with 21 touchdowns on the year. He’s also nearing 2,000 passing yards and compiled over 500 rushing yards this season.
With the line favoring Toledo, Finn will likely get the start for the Rockets on Saturday. That’s big news. However, we just don’t know how healthy he is. Finn threw two interceptions against Western Michigan last week and averaged just 3.2 yards per completion on his five caught passes.
The Rockets scored 33.3 points per game and averaged over 400 yards per game. The offensive line has been the only weak point of the offense.
Defensively, Toledo has allowed just 187.3 yards per game in the air. The Rockets have struggled against the run, allowing over 150 yards per game. Although as a whole, the defense is sensational and easily the best in the MAC.
Will Ohio Earn MAC Championship?
Ohio’s offense has been elite this season. Kurtis Rourke has thrown 25 touchdowns and over 3,250 yards passing this season. Rourke has led the Ohio offense to 34 points per game. The offense has also thrown for over 295 yards per game this season.
The run game has also been dominant, with Sieh Bangura adding 11 more touchdowns on the ground. He’s averaging five yards per carry this season.
Although Ohio has allowed 441.3 yards per game this season, the defense has improved. They’ve held their last five opponents to 24 points or fewer while scoring at least 24 points in every game. The coverage is a bit suspect, and the tackling needs improvement, but overall, Ohio is still dominant up front.
As long as Rourke can beat Toledo’s defense, Ohio will have a strong chance at winning this game at Ford Field. Toledo’s defense is better defensively. But Ohio’s offense is still the best in the MAC. We’ll have the best offense against the best defense in the conference. That’s what conference championships should be.
Prediction and Pick
Ohio’s offense has been potent this year. Although Toledo’s defense has allowed just 187.3 yards per game in the air, Rourke should be able to do some good things offensively. Ohio’s been the most consistent offense in the conference this year. They’ve also got the best quarterback in the conference this season.
I know the Bobcats have struggled on defense this year. Earlier on in the season, they were terrible. But they’ve started to adjust. The defense doesn’t need to play lights out for Ohio to win. They just need to get enough stops to help Ohio win and that’s ultimately what the defense has done.
Toledo’s quarterback situation isn’t great. Even if Finn can play, it’s not clear if he’ll be 100 percent or even play close to it. Toledo’s offense is still good enough to stick around against Ohio. The spread is sitting at -2.5 for a reason, but I like Ohio to pull out a couple of stops to help win this game.
I’m backing Ohio +2.5 and the Over.
