Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Texas A&M Aggies
Saturday, September 24, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at AT&T Stadium
The Razorbacks enter this SEC matchup with a 3-0 straight-up record and are 2-1 against the number.
And while they covered their first two contests as -6 ½ and -9-point home favorites against Cincinnati (31-24) and South Carolina (44-30), their last game was anything but the total domination many expected when they took on FCS entry, Missouri State.
Arkansas fell behind 17-0 and it took until the third quarter and three unanswered scores later before their offense awoke from its slumber.
However, the scrappy Bearcats were not about to go away so easily and regained the lead with a touchdown and field goal, leading by 10 with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
But KJ Jefferson would launch a 73-yard strike to Raheim Sanders before Bryce Stephens took an 82-yard punt return to the house.
Jefferson would score the final touchdown with a one-yard plunge into the end zone which gave the Hogs a 38-27 victory but a far cry from covering the 25 ½ point spread.
Arkansas head coach, Sam Pittman was asked about his team’s struggle against what was supposed to be a cupcake in Missouri State, "I think there's a difference between looking forward to next week and not giving enough respect to the team you're playing... I just think Missouri State outplayed us."
Texas A&M Aggies
Much has been made of Jimbo Fisher’s historic recruiting class this offseason and his public spat with the legendary Nick Saban.
Thus, it’s safe to say the Aggies have been a team to watch and their first game of the 2022 campaign resulted in a 31-0 over FCS entry, Sam Houston, a solid win but one in which the Aggies failed to cover as 35-point favorites in top-rated sportsbooks.
But the earth shook in their second game when A&M was defeated by lightly-regarded Sun Belt challenger, Appalachian State, by the score of 17-14 as 18-point home chalk.
However, Fisher’s crew dusted themselves off and defeated Miami, 17-9, and covered as 6 ½ point home favorites the following week.
LSU transfer, Max Johnson, replaced Haynes King as the man under center in last week’s win over the Hurricanes, but the junior from Athens was a game-manager as opposed to a game-changer connecting on 10-of-20 for 140 yards and one touchdown.
A&M’s ground game posted 124 yards and the defense held Miami to three field goals and no touchdowns.
"We've still got to get a heck of a lot better on offense," Fisher said. "But I thought that was what was best for us to win the game and that's what we did."
Game Betting Analysis
Arkansas is undefeated but they haven’t steamrolled the way some expected. It’s clear the Razorbacks' offense has outpaced its defense in the early going and it will be interesting to see if they can contain the Aggies' somewhat lackluster offense, particularly since A&M has had the opposite issue, a potent defense with a lackluster offense.
I believe it is just a matter of time before all the talent the Aggies have coalesces and delivers a big game as a NCAAF pick.
The defense has been solid and will likely give Arkansas fits. But can their offense, under the command of Max Johnson, move the chains through the air?
Well, I believe they can because Cincinnati, South Carolina, and Missouri State piled up 325, 376, and 357 receiving yards respectively against the Aggies.
Points to Consider
We should also consider that Texas A&M has won nine of their last 10 meetings against Arkansas.
Last year’s game was the first time the Hogs emerged victorious during that span but I believe that will be a one-and-done as there is also a revenge factor for the Aggies here.
We should also note that this could very well be a look-ahead game for the Razorbacks as they will welcome Alabama to Fayetteville next week.
