Notre Dame should’ve lost against Toledo last week. Can Purdue actually pull off the upset in Week 3? Here you can look at the Week 3 betting odds.

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Saturday, September 18, 2021 – 02:30 PM EDT at Notre Dame Stadium

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish escaped a huge scare against Toledo, winning last week’s game 32-29. Had Toledo kneeled at the one-yard line instead of scoring a touchdown, we’re talking about Toledo upsetting Notre Dame right now.

Some players are just too selfish when it comes down to it. Or they’re just poorly coached. It’s one or the other. Anyway, Jack Coan looked brilliant against Florida State and struggled against Toledo. It’s all kind of making sense now. Florida State ended up losing to Jacksonville State last week. Of course, Coan looked good against Florida State. Florida State’s defense is terrible.

Coan dislocated his finger in the game against Toledo but will be fine for this game. The players and coaching staff are looking at the positives saying his dislocated finger just shows his grit. He threw the game-winning touchdown after dislocating his finger a player later.

The offensive line looked great blocking for Coan but the run game needs to break out more. The run blocking was dreadful these first two games and we’re used to seeing more out of this running game.

On defense, Notre Dame will be fine. They’re always a top-tier defense and can make plays when needed the most. Except, they didn’t get a stop late in the game against Toledo. That needs to be addressed. Either way, the coverage, pass rush, rushing defense, and tackling are all above average throughout the first two games.

Purdue is also coming into this game 2-0 with wins over Oklahoma State and Connecticut. The Oklahoma State win was impressive and keeping Connecticut to no points was also encouraging.

The Boilermakers are led by Jack Plummer who has thrown for 558 yards along with six touchdowns and no interceptions. Through their first two games, they’ve scored an average of 39.5 points and look like an offense that could click against any team, including Notre Dame.

Defensively, Purdue looks tough but they’ve also faced two opponents that are not really premier on the offensive side of the ball. Either way, they sit 2-0 and have looked good doing it.

Notre Dame’s defense has to concern you moving forward. They didn’t perform all that well against Florida State and allowed Toledo to score the “game-winning touchdown” before it wasn’t. They’ve now allowed nearly 400 yards per game on defense in their first two games and they’ve gone up against Florida State and Toledo.

Purdue should be able to shine offensively. The thing is, Notre Dame still has a stacked defense with first-round picks on the field. These guys are talented defenders and once it all clicks, offenses will struggle to do much of anything against the Fighting Irish.

Right now, I’ve enjoyed watching Plummer go to work and I expect Notre Dame to struggle to rush the college football against a solid rushing defense in Purdue. After watching last week, I’m not sold on Notre Dame. I’ll take the points with Purdue, on the road.
