Can Fighting Irish and Aggies Rebound From Upset Losses in NCAAF Week 3?

Upset by a pair of Sun Belt teams a week ago, Notre Dame and Texas A&M have our full attention as we explore potential value in fading or following the Fighting Irish and Aggies on the Week 3 college football betting card.

Expectations were high in South Bend, Indiana and College Station, Texas before the season started, but the two football teams that call those town home have been disappointing so far, though that isn’t stopping us from including them with our Week 3 best NCAAF picks.

California Golden Bears vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Saturday, September 17, 2022 – 02:30 PM EDT at Notre Dame Stadium

What You Should Know

Congratulations to anyone who had the prop bet on Knute Rockne rolling over in his grave more than 5½ times if the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost to Marshall in the shadows of Touchdown Jesus last Saturday.

Word around South Bend this week is Ka-noot will rise from the grave and start kicking some tail if Notre Dame doesn’t bounce back this week with a big win when the California Golden Bears come to town this week.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Analysis

Seats Have Opened Up on Irish Bandwagon Notre Dame didn’t necessarily play that well in a 21-10 loss at Ohio State in the season opener, but at least the Fighting Irish played error-free and stayed inside the number at top-rated sportsbooks that was generated primarily by public response to all of the preseason hype on the Buckeyes.

Mistakes did cost Notre Dame in the 26-21 loss to Marshall last week, particularly one pick that was brought back by the Thundering Herd for a score.

It didn’t help losing quarterback Tyler Buchner to a shoulder injury that ends his season, but that could be a rallying point for the Irish.

California Golden Bears Analysis

Cal Starts 2-0, But Untested Now in his sixth season at Berkeley, Justin Wilcox has his Cal crew off to a 2-0 start; trouble is, those two wins have come against the Cal Davis Aggies (barely a cover in that one) and the UNLV Rebels, who were close to an outright upset as 2-touchdown underdogs.

Wilcox didn’t have a lot of experience coming back at California this season, so maybe that accounts for the so-so efforts with so many new faces in starting roles, though a trip to South Bend just might be the highlight loss for this team when it’s all said and done.

California vs. Notre Dame Best Bet

Talking heads have been filling time this week jumping on Freeman and the Fighting Irish, and good points have been made about the team going through some growing pains.

I’ll be adding them to my college football picks and giving up the 10½ points in a 27-13 final.

Miami Hurricanes vs. Texas A&M Aggies

Saturday, September 17, 2022 - 09:00 PM EDT at Kyle Field

What You Should Know

A funny thing happened on the way for Texas A&M to make into the College Football Playoffs as a chic pick on the preseason NCAAF futures: Jimbo Fisher forgot how important offense was, and it ain’t going to magically get better this week against the Miami Hurricanes.

‘Canes Seeking 3-0 Start Under Cristobal Miami will be seeking its third consecutive win over Texas A&M, as well as its third victory to begin the Mario Cristobal era.

Miami Hurricanes Analysis

This is definitely going to be a huge step up in competition for the Hurricanes whose two victories came at the expense of Bethune Cookman of the FCS and Southern Miss of the Sun Belt.

The Hurricanes did play solid defense against both the Wildcats and Golden Eagles, and they’ll be going up a bunch of Aggies who have proven to be puny on offense.

Texas A&M Aggies Analysis

Aggies Have to Establish Ground Game Noting Southern Miss is from the Sun Belt isn’t meant as a knock on the conference; after all, Appalachian State knocked off Texas A&M last week as an 18-point underdog on the NCAAF odds, one of three Sun Belt teams to topple Power 5 squads, including Notre Dame’s loss.

The Aggies have been pathetic on offense, there’s just no way around that, and if they’re going to take control of this game, a sustained drive early is a must.

Miami vs. Texas A&M Best Bet

This kickoff is a late one on the Week 3 schedule, and later than most Aggies are used to.

They’ll still show up and make a lot of noise, possibly even pulling their team through on a warm, muggy evening at the Home of the 12th Man.

But it will be tight, a nail-biter, and that’s why I’m taking the points and playing the total to stop short in a 21-20 final for one team or the other.
