Now that coaches, players, fans, and college football bettors have knocked the rust off from a long offseason, it’s time to get down to business with a look at the best NCAAF picks in Week 2.

South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Arkansas Razorbacks

Saturday, September 10, 2022 – 12:00 PM EDT at Razorback Stadium

What You Should Know

Fans will be decked out in red and calling the hogs in Arkansas this Saturday, and the Razorbacks will need all the help they can get when the South Carolina Gamecocks come to play the SEC opener for both sides.

Though the contest takes a backseat to the early marquee showdown in Austin between Alabama and Texas, the Gamecocks and Razorbacks will still get national television love from ESPN.

It’s Arkansas getting all the love from the top-rated sportsbooks. The Razorbacks are listed as favorites in 8½-9 point range, and scoreboard punters are faced with a 53-53½ point total.

South Carolina Gamecocks Analysis

‘Beamer Ball’ Alive and Well at South Carolina

We can’t help but think that having his father in the stands for last week’s win over Georgia State somehow influenced the football gods and helped Shane Beamer’s Gamecocks to a 35-14 triumph, thanks in large part to a second-half rally fueled by the play of special teams.

Beamer’s father Frank built a legacy on special teams during his long tenure at Virginia Tech, and a couple of blocked punts returned for touchdowns were huge in South Carolina’s comeback after trailing early in the third quarter as 12-point chalk on NCAAF odds boards.

Arkansas Razorbacks Analysis

Early Lead Stands Up for Hogs in Opener

Sam Pittman and the Razorbacks also got 2022 started on a winning note with a 31-24 decision at home against Cincinnati. Arkansas built a 14-0 lead at the half that was aided by an early Bearcats turnover, then drained nearly the final six minutes of the game to frustrate Cincinnati.

Junior quarterback KJ Jefferson guided the Arkansas offense to the victory, throwing for 3 touchdowns and running for another. Raheim Sanders ran for 117 yards on 20 carries and Trey Knox hauled in 6 of Jefferson’s passes, 2 of those catches for scores.

First Meeting in 5 Years

South Carolina and Arkansas played their very first SEC game against one another in 1992, a 45-7 romp for the Razorbacks who lead the all-time series 13-10. All 23 of the games have come since the two schools joined the SEC in 1991.

The Gamecocks have been victorious in the last three meetings and covered all three wins. The most recent clash was in October 2017, a 48-22 South Carolina romp that made it five consecutive contests breaching the totals.

Will the ‘Over’ Trend Continue?

A lot has changed at both schools since South Carolina and Arkansas played and continued the trend of final scores going past the total.

I’m counting on that to end in this meeting with an NCAA football pick on the scoreboard coming up short in a 30-21 Arkansas win.

Houston Cougars vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Saturday, September 10, 2022 - 04:00 PM EDT at Jones AT&T Stadium

What You Should Know

A year from now, this will be a conference game on the schedule for the Houston Cougars and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Whether or not the Big 12 will maintain legitimate standing as a Power 5 Conference, well, that remains a mystery.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Analysis

Raiders Have Won the Last 4 Meetings

Having been conference foes in the past, there’s plenty of history between the two programs. The Cougars are up 18-14-1 in the rivalry, their advantage built by dominating the Red Raiders when the schools were members of the now-deceased Southwest Conference.

Texas Tech has been cutting into the margin by winning the last four matchups, including a second-half rally a year ago in a 38-21 final that was the opener for both sides.

Underdogs have covered three of the last five, with four of the last five failing to reach the totals.

Houston Cougars Analysis

UH Escapes San Antonio in Triple OT

Dana Holgorsen and the Cougars had their hands full last Saturday in San Antonio before securing a 37-35 win in triple overtime.

Clayton Tune scored twice in extra play, and the Houston defense stopped UTSA on a 2-point conversion play to end matters.

The Joey McGuire era in Lubbock began with an easy 63-10 romp by Texas Tech past beleaguered Murray State. Redshirt soph Donovan Smith relieved senior Tyler Shough in the first half and completed 14 of 16 passes, 4 of them for touchdowns.

Texas Tech Favored by a Field Goal

Texas Tech is favored by 3 points at the NCAAF odds, with Saturday’s total sitting in the 64½-65½ range. Look for the Red Raiders to move to 2-0 under McGuire in a 37-28 final.
