NC State Wolfpack vs. Syracuse Orange

Saturday, October 15, 2022 – 03:30 PM EDT at JMA Wireless Dome

What You Should Know

NC State enters this Week 7 matchup with their conference rivals from Syracuse boasting a 5-1 record but they haven’t performed well at the betting windows, covering the spread on only two of six occasions this season.

In their last outing, the Wolfpack, installed as 3.5-point home favorites at the best sportsbooks, welcomed Florida State to Raleigh and found themselves trailing, 17-3, at halftime. However, the defense silenced the Seminoles the rest of the way and NC State rallied for a 19-17 victory, yet once again failing to cover the all-important number.

Junior quarterback, Devin Leary, was merely a game manager as opposed to a game-changer in this one, passing for only 130 yards with one touchdown and one interception. However, the ground attack gashed the Noles’ defense for 182 yards with junior tailback, Jordan Houston, garnering 90 of them.

Orange Glow Brightly for Bettors

Syracuse takes their pristine 5-0 mark into this meeting with NC State, and except for a 22-20 win over Virginia three weeks ago as 10-point favorites, the Orange have been money for those betting on them this season, boasting a 4-1 ATS record.

The Orange had a cakewalk in their last contest when they met FCS weak-sister, Wagner, and did exactly what one would expect a nationally ranked FBS team to do when meeting such an opponent – they crushed.

When the smoke cleared, Syracuse notched a 59-0 demolition of the Seahawks and even covered as a whopping 53-point home favorite.

Outstanding Shrader and Tucker

In what was essentially shooting fish in a barrel for the Orange offense, junior quarterback Garrett Shrader was a perfect 17-of-17 for 238 yards and a pair of touchdowns. But it was sophomore steam-roller Sean Tucker who had a day for the ages when he smashed and dashed his way to 232 yards on 23 carries and 3 touchdowns.

Tucker is now No. 7 on Syracuse’s all-time rushing yards list with 2,668 and he was thankful after the game when he said, "This means a lot to me. It represents the hard work I've put in. Just being up there and passing those guys, being mentioned with the greats at Syracuse, is special."

NC State vs. Syracuse: Pick and Prediction

Wolfpack's Drawback

The first thing we should know is that NC State won a Pyrrhic victory on Saturday as quarterback Devin Leary suffered an arm injury and was forced to leave the game and is unlikely to be suiting up on Saturday.

The Wolfpack also lost wideout Devin Carter and running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye. All three players are key pieces to NC State’s offensive puzzle.

We should also note that Syracuse is 5-0 for the first time since 1987 when they went undefeated that season. Oh, and in Syracuse’s last game in which they devoured Wagner, they agreed to play 10-minute third and fourth quarters due to the lopsided score.

Orange coach, Dino Babers, clearly took his foot off the gas after his team led 49-0 at the half and scored only 10 points the rest of the way.

Oranges Are Ready to Win

There’s also a revenge factor going for Syracuse, having lost their last three meetings against NC State, and are now in a position to give the Pack a taste of their own medicine.

NC State has a decent defense but their offense has been sputtering all season, ranked just 91st in total yards, averaging 371.7 per game, and 67th in points scored with 30.5 PPG.

But what makes this an even worse spot for the Wolfpack is that they will not only likely be without their starting quarterback, but could be absent a key tailback and wide receiver. And on top of it all, Syracuse is coming off a bye, owns an excellent defense, ranked 10th in yards allowed and 9th in points allowed. This looks like an easy cover for the Orange in a low-scoring affair.
