The Miami Hurricanes have been a huge disappointment this season but would get bowl eligible on Saturday with an upset victory at No. 9 Clemson.

Miami Hurricanes vs. Clemson Tigers

Saturday, November 19, 2022 – 03:30 PM EST at Memorial Stadium (Clemson, SC)

ESPN has this ACC matchup as the Miami looks for consecutive wins for just the second time this season and Clemson looks to stay unbeaten in league play

Because the teams are in different divisions –those will go away starting next year– they don’t play every year. They last did in 2020 when No. 1 Clemson hosted No. 7 Miami and the Tigers rolled 42-17.

Trevor Lawrence was still the Clemson QB then and threw for 292 yards and three scores and rushed for a TD, while Travis Etienne rushed for 149 yards and two scores. They are both with the Jacksonville Jaguars now. Miami QB D’Eriq King was picked off twice and held to just 121 yards. He did rush for 84 yards and a score. King is long gone now.

The favorite is 4-0 against the spread on the NCAAF odds in the past four meetings.

Canes Were Without Starting QB

The Hurricanes were picked to win the ACC’s Coastal Division but are just 5-5 overall and 3-3 in league play – they have to win this game (not happening) or the regular-season finale vs. Pittsburgh to get bowl eligible in Coach Mario Cristobal’s first season. He is doing well recruiting-wise, although he just lost touted QB Jaden Rashada in a flip to rival Florida.

Miami looked terrible two weeks ago in a 45-3 home loss to Florida State, but bounced back with a 35-14 win at Georgia Tech on Saturday. Kamren Kinchens had three of Miami's four interceptions and scored on a 99-yard pick-six. Kinchens became the first Hurricane to make three interceptions in a game since Kenny Phillips in 2006. He leads the ACC with six interceptions.

Starting UM quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, once considered a possible first-round NFL Draft pick in 2023 (not any longer), was out with a right shoulder issue he has been battling for weeks.

Van Dyke's Replacement

Freshman Jacurri Brown made his first start and completed 14 of 19 for 136 yards and three scores while rushing for 87 yards. He was the first true freshman to start at QB with the Canes since Brad Kaaya in 2014. Too early to know who starts under center for this one.

“If you watch his high school tape, he does a good job throwing it. He does a good job running it and he runs it with power and he has great ball security. Always has,” Cristobal said. “He did a real nice job.”

Miami had 226 yards on the ground — 118 by running back Jaylan Knighton — and averaged 5.3 yards per carry as a team even though starting running back Henry Parrish Jr. was also unavailable. He has 569 yards and four TDs on 120 carries. Too early to know if he will play this week as well. The Canes are 1-5 ATS in their past six ACC games.

Clemson Wins When Scoring First

Clemson already has clinched the ACC’s Atlantic Division and will face North Carolina in the conference title game in Charlotte on Dec. 3. The Tigers are going to have to win out and get a lot of help to reach the College Football Playoff as they are ranked No. 10 in that with the new rankings out Tuesday night. They should move up at least one spot Tuesday because No. 6 Oregon was upset by Washington.

Coach Dabo Swinney’s club bounced back from a non-conference loss at Notre Dame with a 31-16 home win over Louisville on Saturday, the team’s 39th straight home win – an ACC record and the ninth-longest in FBS history. There was some talk that Swinney might make a starting QB change, but he stuck with DJ Uiagalelei, who threw for 185 yards and a TD and rushed for 32 yards and a score. Clemson had 248 yards on the ground to improve to 75-1 when rushing for 200+ yards under Swinney.

Clemson's Defense

The Tigers’ excellent defense registered two takeaways, four sacks and nine tackles for a loss despite starting linebacker Trenton Simpson out for undisclosed reasons. He’s a Butkus Award semifinalist.

Clemson has now gone six calendar years without a home loss. Clemson’s last home defeat was on Nov. 12, 2016 against Pitt. It won a 10th consecutive game against a conference opponent. It marks Clemson’s fifth conference winning streak of 10 or more games since the ACC’s founding in 1953.

Placekicker BT Potter scored in a 50th consecutive game. Potter has scored in every game since earning the starting job prior to the 2019 season after serving as the team’s kickoff specialist in 2018. The Clemson record is 53 games, set by Chandler Catanzaro from 2010-13.

Will the Tigers Keep the Winning Streak Going?

The Tigers are now 74-4 when scoring first since 2015 and have won 104 of their last 106 games, including each of its last 67, when leading at halftime. Clemson led 24-10 entering the fourth quarter vs. Louisville and improved to 125-2 since 2011 when leading after three quarters. They have now won 66 straight games when taking a lead into the fourth quarter dating to November 2016.

Swinney (159) pulled within one victory of Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops (160) for the second-most victories in the first 15 seasons of a head coaching career in FBS history. The Tigers are 4-9 ATS in their past 13 at home.
