One of the biggest games on the Week 4 college football betting schedule takes place in Knoxville where the Tennessee Volunteers host the Florida Gators in an SEC rivalry.
Florida Gators vs. Tennessee Volunteers
Saturday, September 24, 2022 – 03:30 PM EDT at Neyland Stadium
Florida and Tennessee are each coming off winning scores last week, but the outcomes were still very different with the Gators holding on by the skin of their teeth while the Volunteers coasted in a cakewalk.
We’ll get to see which game prepared Florida or Tennessee better for their huge collision on the Week 4 card, and judging by the NCAAF odds, the top-rated sportsbooks, that would be the Volunteers who are favored by 10-10½ with 63½-64 for the total.
Turnovers Almost Cost Gators Again
Florida escaped a close call against South Florida, 31-28. The Bulls missed a last-minute field goal that could have forced overtime, and outgained the Gators by nearly 100 yards while winning the time of possession battle by close to 13 minutes.
Favored by more than three touchdowns, Billy Napier’s bunch seemed to take control of the game in the second quarter when the Gators scored three times and went into the locker room with a 24-13 advantage, but a couple of second half turnovers changed everything.
Montrell Johnson Jr. led a good effort on the ground for Florida by topping the 100-yard plateau on just a half-dozen carries, but the Gators struggled to put together sustained drives and Anthony Richardson was picked off twice a week after throwing a pair of interceptions in a loss to Kentucky.
Vols Showing Off Big-Play Capabilities
Tennessee took on its second MAC team of the season, and just like the season opener against Ball State, the Volunteers enjoyed an easy go of it with a 63-6 romp as massive 47½-point favorites at BetOnline.
Josh Heupel was able to get reps for just about everyone thanks to a 35-0 lead at intermission. Hendon Hooker was 14-for-18 passing for nearly 200 yards and two scores, with Jalin Hyatt wreaking havoc on the Zips with five catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns.
Though it’s a good problem to have, if there’s one drawback to the Tennessee offense this season it’s that they Volunteers have five scores of 40+ yards, and eight of 20+ yards, and that has led to them losing the TOP battle each game, not a regular occurrence for a team that’s 3-0 ATS.
Double Check the Injury List
College football bettors will definitely want to give the injury list a once over since it is so early in the week and names can easily be added or subtracted, but right now the biggest concern for Florida is middle linebacker Ventrell Miller.
The sixth-year senior from Lakeland, Florida missed last week’s game against South Florida with what is being called a lower body injury, and Miller is listed as day-to-day. He was second on the team with 15 tackles before missing the Week 3 contest.
Tennessee appears to be heading into its Southeastern Conference slate in relative good health with only a couple of minor issues involving players well back on the depth chart.
UF Has Beaten UT 16 of Last 17
Despite being members of the SEC since 1933, Tennessee and Florida didn’t start facing each other regularly until 1990, and the Gators have dominated the Volunteers since then by winning 25 of the 32 matchups in that span to hold a 31-20 overall lead in the series.
- Florida has won the last five, and covered three of the last four meetings.
- The last three clashes failed to reach totals that ranged from 49½ to 65½.
- The Gators coasted to a 38-14 triumph last year in Gainesville, cashing tickets for Florida backers who were laying 18.
A Warm 1st Saturday of Fall
There’s a changing of the seasons coming up this week, and temperatures are going to drop a little in the Knoxville area though it will still be on the warm side with the thermometer in the low-80s at kickoff, plenty of sunshine and a westerly breeze.
Is 10 Points Too Much for the Vols to Give Up?
This game is crucial for both sides in the SEC standings, but especially so for a Florida team that can ill-afford to suffer its second conference loss if the Gators want to seriously challenge the Georgia Bulldogs for the East Division.
Too bad for Florida that by the time the world’s largest outdoor cocktail party rolls around, the Gators will be out to the running. My free NCAAF pick is Rocky Top, 37-23.
