There’s always plenty of interest in the nationally ranked teams but no more so than when we are discussing the tippity-top of the heap.

This week Swinger will render his predictions on all three games after going 3-0 in his college football picks last week!

Swinger’s 2022 College Football ATS Record (3-0)

Underdogs ruled my realm last week when we decided the top-rated sportsbooks were creating artificially high point spreads on the household names in college football.

We had Arkansas State +44 over Ohio State, Marshall +20 ½ over Notre Dame (an outright Marshall win), and FCS entry Furman +44 ½ over Clemson.

The oddsmakers know that the public will always lay the big numbers against lightly regarded teams. But early in the year, that’s a dangerous game plan because even the national powers haven’t played a game in anger.

Well, it worked out just fine for us as we faded the big chalk and cashed with all three dogs that decided to howl for us last week. Without further ado, let’s tear into Week 3 with the top teams in the nation.

UL-Monroe Warhawks vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Saturday, September 17, 2022 – 04:00 PM EDT at Bryant-Denny Stadium

UL-Monroe Warhawks Analysis

The UL-Monroe Warhawks rebounded from a 52-10 loss to Texas when they smothered Nicholls in a 35-7 rout and covered as 4 ½ point home chalk.

But now they will have the dubious distinction of playing a fired-up Nick Saban after his team barely escaped with a 20-19 victory over the same Texas Longhorns that destroyed UL-Monroe.

The comparisons are going to be obvious. Texas smoked the Warhawks and covered as 36 ½ point favorites while Bama barely eked out a win over the Longhorns.

But let’s face it, UL-Monroe’s biggest feat was beating up an FCS school (Nicholls) and they were only 4 ½ point favorites at that!

Alabama Crimson Tide Analysis

I expect the Tide to be clicking on all cylinders for this one and I highly doubt Saban will take his foot off the gas after his team fell from their No. 1 ranking with their showing against unranked Texas last week.

If the Horns can beat ULM by 6 touchdowns, then I can see the Tide beating them by seven and a field goal.

Toledo Rockets vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

Saturday, September 17, 2022 - 07:00 PM EDT at Ohio Stadium

Toledo Rockets Analysis

Toledo has faced a pair of lightweights thus far but disposed of them in an orderly fashion with a 37-0 victory over Long Island University followed by a 55-10 thrashing of U Mass.

Although they failed to cover against LIU as 47-point favorites, they played solid football on both sides of the ball in that game as well as their follow-up against the Minutemen.

If you think I’m bullish on the Rockets, you’re right.

Ohio State Buckeyes Analysis

Ohio State is now 2-0 straight up but 0-2 against the spread with a 21-10 win over Notre Dame and a 45-12 victory over Sun Belt entry, Arkansas State.

The Buckeyes have looked perfectly fine, just not spectacular, and I realize the public will be waiting for them to tear apart a team like Toledo but I believe the Rockets can hang tough and keep this one within the margins.

Georgia Bulldogs vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

Saturday, September 17, 2022 - 12:00 PM EDT at Williams-Brice Stadium

Georgia Bulldogs Analysis

The Bulldogs were one of many enormous favorites that failed to cover the number, but their defense did not disappoint as they followed up their 49-3 destruction of Oregon with a 33-0 shutout over FCS entry Samford.

As impressive as the Bulldogs were, they didn’t even sniff a cover as 54-point home chalk.

South Carolina Gamecocks Analysis

South Carolina entered last week’s matchup as a nine-point road dog after their 35-14 season-opening victory over Georgia State, easily covering as 12-point favorites.

16th-ranked Arkansas was too much for the Gamecocks, as the Razorbacks pulled away to a 44-30 win.

Conference Rivalry

These SEC rivals hooked up just about a year ago and the Bulldogs came away with a 40-13 win over the Cocks but failed to cover the spread as 31 ½ point favorites.

However, it was the first time in 10 meetings that South Carolina covered against Georgia and I believe that will be a one-and-done for the Gamecocks.

Defense vs. Offense

Georgia’s defense looks immense and you can’t cover if you can’t score, okay, Samford proved that theory wrong last week, but I expect a much more aggressive offensive game plan from the Dawgs this week.

Remember, South Carolina got 3 touchdowns from three different rushers last week yet amassed only 40 rushing yards.

You can wipe those smash-mouth TDs out against this dominating Georgia defensive front which means this line looks soft enough to clear with what is now the No. 1 team in the nation.

Following the NCAAF odds, I suggest to lay the big number with the invaders from Athens.
